Economic times are tough at LSU which is facing layoffs of faculty and elimination of entire departments due to a state budget crisis. Although the athletic department is financially separate from the university, it would be extremely bad campus politics to lavish more money on an already fabulously paid football coach when everyone else is under a salary freeze. His money will come from the incentives and any raise will be deferred until layoffs are over at LSU and other staff can get raises, too. If he got a seven-year contract, then he will have plenty of time to collect more money.
