Sort of makes you wonder if Miles won't make it a policy to have a WORKING spare in the background in future years.......not just a back-up - but a competitive spare.....

I honestly believe that was Miles plan all along. Look, when he took over, there was JaMarcus and Flynn and then no one else. It wasn't even a sure thing that Flynn was going to stay around to see a season as a starter if JaMarcus didn't leave early.

Miles comes in, lands RP and we finally had some wiggle room at the QB position if Flynn had left. But when it was JaMarcus that went first, by that time, we had a Flynn, who was more than capable to start, with big game experience under his belt, RP, who was surely capable of starting--and performed very well when he did, and then Lee, the freshman who was redshirting and would still be being groomed this season instead of "trial by fire".

This season, we would have had:

    RP, Jr. as the starter
Lee, RS-Fr and Hatch, RS-Soph competing for the backup job
Jefferson, Fresh who would have spent this season as a redshirt

2009 we possibly could have had:
RP, Sr. as a starter if he didn't have a good enough year to turn pro
Lee, RS-Soph and Hatch, RS-Jr. who both would have had gained experience in mop-up duty this season instead of both being relied on to carry the team themselves
    Jefferson, RS-Fr.
Sheppard, Fr. and at least have the option of a redshirt
    Garrett, no doubt being redshirted.

Please also keep in mind that JR only played part of the time as a RS freshman. As soon as he would make a mistake, he would be pulled for none other than Marcus Randall (who just wasn't a QB; a great athlete, not a QB.)

Now, granted, we really don't have much choice in who is our QB right now, but perhaps JR would've developed quicker if he's just been allowed to make his freshman mistakes and learn from them.
