Although he has moved around in the offense this spring and is expected to wear hats in myriad schemes this fall, prized LSU recruit Russell Shepard will play only quarterback in the spring game Saturday, according to head coach Les Miles. In previous scrimmages this spring Shepard has occassionally lined up in other positions and Miles has made it clear the quicksilver player from Texas will present a multiple threat in 2009. But for the more than 11,000 people expected in Tiger Stadium this Saturday for the concluding scrimmage of spring football, Shepard will play behind center, Miles said after Tuesday's practice. Now that's what I like to hear. Can't wait until Saturday.
After all, why would Miles want to tip off anyone...including the fans... how he might want to use Shep from other formations and in certain down and distance situations?
IMO - Shep isn't going to surprise anyone. He's a known quantity. Opposing coaches only need to imagine how THEY would use an athlete like that. I think this is more about letting him grow as a QB as much as possible. We have to remember that his buddies are still roaming the halls of Cy Ridge High...he's still a very young (but remarkable) dude.
Good point, Bandit !! It sure is great not to be on the outside looking in when it comes to Shepard !! This next season is going to be really exciting because of this young man ... and Randle hasn't even hit campus yet !!
