SMU is the last school, the only reason they got it is because they were warned about what they were doing and blantantly disregaured the warnings thinking the the NCAA wouldn't really do anything. Guess they feel like idiots now... the program has never recovered.

UL is excluded, you have to be alive to receive death penalty.

I graduated from USL in May 1973. The first two years I was there, we lost to Evansville in their place, in the Div. II finals. We moved to D I my jr. year, and made the NCAA tournament, it was 32 teams then, and we won 1 game. My last year, 72-73, we made the NCAA tourney again. Larry Fogle, Roy Ebron, Dwight (Bo) Lamar, Wilbert (Tree) Lofton. Bo Lamar made first team all american at guard, went to the San Diego Conquistadors in the ABA. Ebron went to an ABA team, the Utah Stars I think.

Anywho, before the tournament, the NCAA had the results of an investigation and they were ready to dis-invite USL to the tournament and proceed with sanctions for paying players. USL must have figured they'd never assemble such talent again, and just as soon enjoy it while they had it. They sued the NCAA, saying they could not dis-invite USL as they had not been through any appeal process. Some judge, from La. I am sure, put a restraining order on the NCAA, and USL got to play in the big dance. They won two games and made it to the elite 8. They lost to the Kansas Jayhawks, who went on to win the tournament. Lesson, if you sue the NCAA, when they get hold of you, they'll GIVE YOU THE DEATH PENALTY!!!

It was a real fun club to watch, they were so much better than the teams in the old Gulf States Conference (am I bringing back memories???).

I ran into Beryl Shippley, the head coach of the team, years later in a bar in NO. He was a salesman in the oil patch, real nice guy. He said he'd never again have his salary controlled by 18 year old college kids!

Just reminiscing, good old times! (this is from pure memory, and could be a little shakey, Lofton may have graduated in 72', not 73).

and this is one of the real reasons so many people from UL hate LSU. they think dale brown had something to do with it... and he probably did.

i don't think lsu ever played old USL before the death pentalty. in fact, did lsu and ul even play before brady got here?

either way, i'm glad i'm not a basketball fan because both teams suck.
