LSU is losing one of its top offensive weapons to the NFL, but getting another back for 2009.
Junior wide receiver Brandon LaFell will enter the NFL draft, two people close to LaFell said Wednesday. But running back Charles Scott and offensive tackle Ciron Black will return to school, a decision that will be announced at a news conference in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, multiple sources close to those players said.

I think that's only Tolliver and the two Mitchells returning who have played more than mop up duty. We NEED Randle to sign and Benton to qualify.

Might this news possibly encourage RR to come to LSU -- seems he would be able to step in right away as the top receiver.

:geaux: Quite possibly, but I think RR knows he was going to get a lot of playing time at LSU even if LaFell stayed. Obviously he would get even more now though. Hope he comes. :LSU231:

I think this obviously influences Randle even more towards LSU.

Toliver will be someone to step up and help Randle out.

Benton of course coming in too.

The big question is does this open up things for Debose? Shepard told someone just recently that Debose is coming to LSU (this was on Monday).

I think this isn't a major mistake by Lafell, just a minor miscalculation on his part.

He will most likely be early 2nd round to late 2nd round this year.

He could have been mid 1st to early 2nd next year.

I have not taken a look at the receivers in the draft, but I would think Lafell is anywhere from 3rd to 5th best receiver (projected).

I agree with islstel, I think Lafell is a prototypical NFL WR. Sure did he have a breakout year no, but how much of that was his fault. Sure he had some key drops but TO has several.
He is a big kid, he isnt scared to go over the middle, pretty good hands. Only major flaw is his routes. Which is teachable. He will get drafted, and I think he will do well.

I have to disagree vehemently about his route running.

That is his strength along with blocking on the edge.

Dropping passes is another thing, however.

Really well I guess I could be wrong, sometimes I think it was out of pure frustration as he saw ball after ball go into the chest of the opposing team for awhile. But it seemed that he would round them off. Maybe it was more the QB would miss then him not being in the right spot on timing routes.
    Good points....

Well Craig Davis was 6-1, ran about a 4.49 and snuck in at the end of the first.
Lafell is coming off two good seasons, about the same and better than Davis' senior year and he is bigger, stronger, with similar speed and he is much quicker off the line.
Lafell isn't quite as good a blocker but I'd say he's a better prospect who is very well suited for NFL play, and there are no senior WRs this year who are worth first rounders right now, although pre combine and senior bowl means nothing. It will depend on Harvin, Crabtree, and Hayward Bell declaring, but I could see him, like Davis, sneaking in at the end of the first.
