Only it hasn't worked that way. Polls indicate that the number of people that think handguns would be limited to law enforcement has dropped from 60% to 26% since 1959. I don't think so. We do a lot of things different than Europe. Guns are part of our frontier culture and nobody here is going to expect citizens to give them up. No one is seriously proposing to ban or confiscate all guns. You hear that only from the gun lobby itself, which whistles up this bogeyman whenever some reasonable regulation is proposed. But there is a growing concern among the citizenry about getting better control of them and that is what we should be paying attention to. Better background checks, enforce existing laws strictly, requiring gun locks, and put some brakes on runaway gun trafficking. Registration is nothing to be feared unless you plan to break the law.
Out of curiosity, how does registration prevent a crime? Does vehicle registration prevent DUIs, hit and runs, vehicular homicide?
Good point. The guy in Laffy bought his legally. And really, guns already are "registered." They send in the serial numbers with your name where you buy it, for sure. How would they know where the Laffy guy bought his, otherwise.
You are missing the point. It enables personal responsibility and accountability for weapons. If your car is involved in a hit and run, you can be found and held accountable. Likewise if your gun is used in a homicide, it can be traced to you. People are more responsible when they are required to be so by the law. It's an obvious straw man to suggest that every common-sense measure to reduce gun violence is useless because it won't prevent another incident. The idea is to hold more people responsible for their weapons in order to reduce incidents. It will take a lot of small measures to make a difference, no single item will solve the problem.
You are apparently unaware that this is not what registration is. That is simple a record of gun shop sales, no "defacto" to it. Registration follows the weapon, so if you sell it the person who buys it must transfer registration to himself, just like a car or a boat. Registration inherently comes with a better background check. Those silencers that tiga is so proud of must be registered with ATF including fingerprinting the owner. It comes with a legal document. Why not register the friggin' gun itself? Silencers fall under a class of item known as a “National Firearms Act item”, the same category as machine guns, grenade launchers and other very fun but extremely dangerous things that people must be held responsible for. As far as the federal government is concerned, as long as you submit proper paperwork, go through a background check, and pay a $200 tax you’re good to go.
"But there is a growing concern among the citizenry about getting better control of them and that is what we should be paying attention to. " agreed, legitimate gun owners and legitimate gun shop owners are the key. "Registration is nothing to be feared unless you plan to break the law" on this we disagree, because it a starting point not an end point.
It is neither, really. It is a simple matter of taking personal responsibility for your weapons and being held accountable. No problem for the law-abiding. Fear of of the future is not a reasonable argument for doing nothing at all.
Still not seeing how that prevents crazy people or criminals from perpetrating violence. The strawman argument is yours.
Youd be wrong on the former and obviously less informed on the latter. I'll let you figure out how since your so good at Google.
