oddly enough on the heels of the Tennessee ending last weekend, Florida won the 1989 game in Baton Rouge on an "untimed" play with a field goal to win 16-13. In a truly disastrous season for LSU, the Tigers had tied it up just a minute or so earlier 13-13. This may have been the game which forced the rule change on 'stopping the clock' or 'spiking'. Couldn't do it in '89--had to throw one out of bounds, across the line of scrimmage. Florida, with Emmitt Smith leading the way, came back down field to the LSU 25. But with no timeouts, and just a couple of seconds left, it appeared Florida's pass to stop the clock didn't clear the field before time ran out and the two looked like they had tied , 13-13. Galen Hall, coaching what turned out to be his last game as Gators' head coach, protested while LSU headed to the locker room. Enter referee Dick Burleson. Burleson decided the pass did clear the sidelines with :01 left. Florida made the most of their reprieve and nailed their field goal to win 16-13. Burleson, by the way, who retired from officiating after the 1997 season, was the 'consultant' in the replay booth in Tuscaloosa last year for the LSU-Alabama game. Burleson of course was in on the decision involving Patrick Peterson's interception which was somehow deemed as not an interception. Hopefully LSU will make sure this fellow never has anything in any form or fashion to do with an LSU football game.
I was at that game. I was so ticked, that walking across the golf course to my car afterwards, I threw my seat cusion across 2 fairways in one toss. I could have putted for eagle.
My college roommate just sent me a text asking what the date of the game was, so I googled the game and ended here. Hope you don't mind a Gator inside the board. I actually was the kicker that made the winning try. I was a back-up at the time and had only 2-3 kicks for UF prior. They told me at half-time I was kicker for rest of game. In all my years of playing and as a fan, I've never heard a louder moment in any stadium ever. It was an incredible moment and what makes the SEC so special. It was also the craziest finish that I can remember. Scoreboard was turned off, fireworks were going crazy and the refs were in a huddle trying to figure out if there was time on the clock. Even crazier, Galen Hall got fired the next day.
That is pretty interesting. I don't remember that game for some reason. Probably because I was working one of 3 jobs at the time.
