Heard Kirk H. on a local station here in Raleigh yesterday. He was asked a question on what ifs scenarios :

Ques : At end of the season, what if we have USC (11-1), OSU (11-1) and SEC team (Georgia/LSU/Florida - 11/2), which teams should go in.

Kirk : I can't say about the second team in THE game but the SEC team with 2 loss should be there over 1-loss Pac10 or Big10 and we could debate about which 1-loss should play SEC team.

Wow.. very surprised to hear that from Kirk H. especially since USC and OSU are considered always loaded and all-world teams. Looks like last two yrs of SEC domination in BCS has humbled him a little bit.

    Geaux tigers.

This is the same guy who gave Corso a plate of cupcakes while saying that teams like Michigan had no business playing cupcake teams like App St. Seems like his new favorite dish is crow. The SEC is by far the top BCS conference - 'bout time he figured that out.

One thing I HAtE to admit: Herbstreit is right. He's the biggest azzwipe on ESPN. According to him, we were trying to replace Miles last year. But, he's right................damnit.

In his defense, he was reporting that based on what Desmond Howard had told him a few minutes earlier.

I think after the last two seasons, though, people have finally gotten it that the SEC is the best conference in football, hands down.

    On a semi related noteā€¦

Randy Rosetta called in to ESPN Media Zone's college football conference call and asked Kirk Herbstreit and Jesse Palmer about LSU's championship possibilities. Both were very complimentary of LSU in general and said that absolutely LSU in the mix as a championship contender. I assume Rosetta will have an article out in the next day or two, but I always enjoy catching the source material whenever possible.

Here is a 3 minute, 40 second audio clip with the LSU part:

Damn scUM. Sounds like he set him up. :hihi: All Journalists rely on their sources, or their bosses, to give them reliable info. Can't blame Herbie for that.

I feel like this isn't really a fair assessment from Herbie, and before everyone is up in arms, I'll explain why. You have to take into account what happens in the season. Let's say, some crazy stuff happens in the OOC, and that the SEC has a down year. (By all indications, the league as a whole won't be as tough as it was last year). That is not to say it's not the toughest at the moment, but I think it's playing to the SEC homers a bit, and not responsible journalism.

As much as it pains me to say it, I can see a 2 loss SEC team being chosen over tOSU, but if another team (Wisky for example--very good bowl record vs the SEC), has one loss, and has dominated, then i'm not sure you can make blanket statements.

Not that this will happen, in fact, I see very slim possibilites in which a 2 loss SEC team gets passed over by a one loss champ from the B10/P10, but after last season, it's ridiculous to make this claim preseason.

That, and the B10 had been the best league in the first 5 years of the BCS, the SEC the second 5 years. Let's not pretend that the SEC has dominated since the first snap of College Football. The other leagues will catch up sooner or later, and when they do, let's hope the SEC isn't so full of itself that it doesn't get rolled over. Hubris is a weakness, not a strength, and it will cost you wins.

Respect is due, but not worship, and it's the media's responsibility to be objective. they obviously don't do this in politics or sports anymore.
