It'd be funny and not that surprising if the Russian owner was paying the Russian player under the table, as it would reinforce the stereotype of Russians being corrupt shady mafia-types

But there are valid reasons why AK47 would take a big pay cut to go to NYC:

-AK47 has made more than 100 million already in just NBA salary alone, so he doesn't need money as much as the next guy

-the year before last, AK47 left the Jazz after ten years and close to 20 million a year to go play a year in Russia where he donated his whole salary that year to charity and played for free (the team he played for in Moscow was like the NY Yankees of Russia)

-a young Russian man getting on the good side of one of the richest and most powerful men in Russia is priceless. The guy owns a private tropical island with a luxury resort where Prince William and Kate went for their honey moon. He also owns a palatial yacht that he rarely uses and I'm sure he lets his friends borrow all the time. On top of that he's big into Russian national politics. A friend like that is priceless for a young man like AK47, esp since his future is back in Russia, were AK47 is an all-time great (AK47 named his kids Fedya and Stepan, for ex)

-working for the boss and owner you trust more than any of the other NBA owners is priceless, and AK47 has played for one of his teams before

-NYC city has a huge Russian population which provides much more marketing potential for AK47 than any other American city. Besides, for a filthy rich person like AK47, NYC has a lot more to offer than Minnesota

    -etc

I wouldn't call him famous. I've never heard of him.
