On my drive in to work this morning, one of the radio guys was convinced that the Nets owner (billionaire Russian guy) was paying Kirilenko under the table in addition to the contract he just signed. Kirilenko signed with the T-Wolves last year and had a player option for $10m this upcoming year. He declined to exercise the option and signed a 2 year deal worth 3.1m/year. The Nets can't offer more because of their other big contracts. Kirilenko also played for one of the owner's other Russian teams in the past.
'preciate it... he's either a very easy going and generous player, or he's getting a ton of under the table money and perks. Not many players in any sport or league are willing to take that sort of pay cut.
He is a small forward, and his wife is dirty filthy rich, he really has no need for extra money. He also has history with the owner as he played on the guys Russian Moscow team. He also is looking for a place to get a ring. Sure there may be some back door deals going on, but it's not for certain.
