mrs kcal and friends go to thurby each year. lots of fun to be had at Churchill Downs.

we’ve gotten a table upstairs during the racing season and that’s fun too (not on derby weekend). you pay one price for a table of 8 that includes an all day buffet and open bar. You can stay in and watch the races in the ac or out on the balcony.

the red mile in Lexington is awesome as well

I usually hit opening day at Del Mar. Mostly for the talent tho, not necessarily the ponies

Couple years ago I made train reservations to take my son to Oceanside for the day. We got to the platform in Irvine and I noticed how dressed up everyone looked as they arrived. Ugh....I'd forgotten to check the calendar and it was opening day at Del Mar. What a nightmare. The train was delayed 50 minutes due to a prior holdup and the folks just started opening and drinking what they had. Many were slap drunk by the time we boarded.

There weren't any open seats so we stood, although there were plenty of able-bodied men who could have offered their seats. Eventually a couple people got off over the next few stops so we sat but the Del Mar peeps got drunker and drunker. I couldn't believe the language....despite reminding them that there were kids on board. I was never so happy to disembark.

It is quite the spectacle. I usually wouldn't go, but the women I date seem to always find it necessary to go. The challenge to find the best stupid hat is almost abusive to have to be bothered with. I find it odd that for an event that warrants a dress code, most usually end up putrid drunk. The phrase "Pretty Stupid" was born at opening day at the race track.

I used to go with my step-grandmother a long time ago, they lived in Rancho Santa Fe. She was a member of the turf club. It was a great experience but even the wealthy and well-dressed act stupid when they are drunk.
