I know we're stuck on weight, but I think it's more than just the number. Montgomery enrolled - like Pat Peterson, Mike Ford, and I'm told Kadron Boone - already physically ready to play. Filled out, strong, etc. IMO - all Mingo needs is more time in the weight room, so that when he grabs a hand full of QB-jersey coming around the end, he can muscle the rest of the QB to the ground. I think he would be fine at 220, if he was 6'2". But he's not 6'2". And I'm not buying 235, unless he did indeed have a very good summer, which I sincerely hope is true. He looked 210 in the Spring Game, and 25 lbs of muscle is a lot of weight from Feb to July.
Mingo can get a QB to the ground. The weight and strength is needed to fight off blocks against huge OTs and plugging runners in the hole. Saw Sam the other day and he is really close to the 250 range.
You're right - point stands, though. It's weight proportional to his size, IMO. He definitely needs about 240-250 pounds on that frame. Hell, I'm 6' and my fighting weight is 215. Of course, I run a 5.4s 40, so I got that goin' for me...
Just quoting the media guide. I had heard he was around 230 at the spring game. Whether he weighs 235 is not the issue, because that still isn't big enough to be an every down DE in the SEC.
If the tigers can utilize a shifting, stunting line, a couple of lighter-but-quicker defensive linemen can get around some of the lumbering, 320 pound offensive linemen in the SEC. Montgomery may have to come out in the short-yardage situation for a bigger guy, but that keeps him from being pounded inside too badly and fresh to utilize his quickness in the second half.
Yep and that is why I am not putting much stock into who is starting on the line or not because we will use each in different situations. Mingo will on 3rd and long and obvious passing downs. Sam is very quick himself who would be perfect for 3rd and short and 3rd and 5 situations. Chancey is more of a run stopper on the outside along with Edwards etc... Matchups will also come into play. Seems like Sam is the best overall with a good mix of power and speed and could translate to the most snaps this year. We should have a very fresh defensive line this year.
Folks don't worry about weight, you can play football or you can't. Its simple. Height, speed, weight is great on paper. I want someone that can play ball. Name the guy that played at LSU, played years on the OL in the Pros. He's been selected to the Pro Bowl on six consecutive occasions. When he came to LSU he was 6'4" and 238lbs. Kind of thin, don't you think?
No one is saying that it is all about weight but it does make a difference. Even Kevin Mawae had to gain a bunch of weight and the results followed each year he was at LSU. Came in at 244 and was up to 262 by his junior year and 270 during his senior year. Mingo came into LSU as a too tall LB prospect at 209. You better believe the LSU staff has been pushing him hard to gain the weight to get SEC ready and quick. Now at 237... I do agree you have to have someone who can play ball first and foremost but players are bigger and faster than ever especially in the SEC.
