Didn't think about that but you're right.

Anybody know the real genesis of the playoff movement? What really got the conversation started in a meaningful way?

I'll put my vote in for BYU winning the national championship without having played anyone.

Sounds good except I wouldn't limit it to only division winners. Just like the SEC has the possibility of getting 3 in I could see where the Big 10 could have 3 deserving teams in an 8 team scenario. If Penn State were to beat Ohio State and then beat Minnesota in a rematch in the conference champion ship you would have Penn State and Minnesota at 12-1 and Ohio State at 11-1.

And the Big 12 doesn't have divisions, The top 2 in the standings play the conference title game, The stated goal of the playoff committee has from the beginning to select the 4 best teams regardless of conference championships. That philosophy should be carried over into an 8 team playoff, Any other way and you face the very real chance of a 3 or 4 loss conference champion making the playoffs,
Texas already has 3 losses this season but they still have a shot of playing in the Big 12 championship game. Under your plan Texas could get in the playoffs over a much better Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia or even Alabama. Everybody wants a plan that gives the team they root for the best chance but the public at large wants to see the very best teams square off for all the marbles,

That was in 1984 so it didn't get anything started, I believe that Nebraska was the best team that year, BYU's claim to the title is as bogus as Central Florida's claim to the 2017 title or any of the titles awarded to the gumps by the Rural Alabama Moonshine Distillers Association.

    * In looking this up I saw that Florida was the 1984 SEC champion but had to vacate the title due to rules violations, so there is no 1984 SEC champion. Under present day rules second place LSU would have been declared the champs. Should we claim it?

"the public at large wants to see the very best teams square off for all the marbles",.. right now, which teams those are, is totally a matter of opinion

nope, limit playoff teams to division winners only, the big 12 would have to change to the same format as the rest, or only have one team eligible. I'm sick of the rankings being important, that's not football, just talking head's bullshit. "Strength of schedule" is crap too, win your division, that's what would be important,.. ooc games wouldn't count for much, nobody would care about the sec's weak schedule, do what you want,.. then show the country your east and west winners

Like @shane0911 and I discussed, now it's setup where LSU's win over bama doesn't mean much, if bama can still make the playoffs,..
... under the system I propose, right now LSU would have a one game lead over alabama, and the Tigers would own the tiebreaker, the result of saturday's victory would be monumental, as it should be, to be in the playoffs, bama would need to win out and LSU lose 2 of 3

I don't care about a conference's third place team,.. there would still be argument over which three conference runner-ups are chosen as wildcard playoff teams

let's cut out the popularity contest, setup a legitimate playoff system, and play football

What if the SEC's or B1G's 3rd place team is clearly a better team than another conferences champion?

I still like the expansion to 6 teams.

Top 2 on bye. So getting into that top 2 being so highly coveted makes ALL games important.

I don't like the conference championship automatically making it in this 6 team playoffs.

don't care,.. "clearly better" is still a matter of opinion,.. let's take opinion out of it, and make the conference results matter the most

I don't like byes, never thought giving the top teams, (in someone's opinion), the week off, while the other teams beat each other up was fair,.. why do they get an advantage? because they won a beauty contest?.. make em play,.. more games for the fans to enjoy without adding length to the playoffs

I have to agree on that one. I favor 8 teams. I do like it in the NFL though where the top 2 teams in each conference get a first round bye. The NFL is so tough that those teams have earned it, not having it given to them by somebody's vote.
