So from a purely political vantage, losing to HRC AND losing the senate in the election would leave the conservative position totally f**ked. You can imagine what she and that scumbag Harry Reid would get on the court. Do you really want to take that chance????
From a polity standpoint we CANNOT let the division between left and right get any worse. That would fracture our society in ways similar to 1860. It wouldn't be a civil war but a breakdown of political order and we would become a South American country with leftist an right wing oligarchies succeeding each with dictatorship and chaos.

Some more support for conducting hearings and voting on the nomination. Both Justice Roberts AND Justice Scalia were against the ultra partisan nature of SCOTUS confirmations. BTW this time it's the Rs but the Ds have had equal or worse moments
