OK, just how good was Drew Brees Sunday?

As good as anybody’s ever been in a Super Bowl.

Brees completed 82 percent of his passes, threw for 288 yards, didn’t throw an interception and had two touchdown passes.

He’s only the third quarterback in NFL history (and second this month) to complete 80 percent of his passes in a playoff game and also throw for 285 or more yards with multiple touchdowns and no interceptions.

The others are Kurt Warner (against the Packers this month) and Sunday’s losing quarterback, Peyton Manning, against the Broncos in 2003.

In Super Bowl history, only Phil Simms’ historic performance against the Broncos in Super Bowl XXI in 1987 is in the same class as Brees’ performance Sunday. Simms completed 88 percent of his passes with three TDs, no INTs and 268 passing yards.

Brees is only the third quarterback in NFL history – regular season or postseason – to throw as many as 39 passes in a game without an interception and still complete at least 82 percent of his passes. The others were Jeff Garcia (37-for-45, 82 percent) against the Lions while he was with Tampa in 2007 and Manning (32-for-39, 82 percent) against the Broncos in 2006.

Brees now has these career playoff numbers – 150-for-225 for 1645 yards with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. He nudged his career playoff passer rating from 100.6 to 103.7, and that moved him past Warner (102.8) and into second place in NFL history among QBs with 150 or more attempts, behind only Bart Starr (104.8).

He also boosted his all-time playoff completion percentage from 63.4 all the way up to 66.7 percent, which is the highest in NFL postseason history, just above Warner’s 66.5 percent (again, based on 150 or more attempts).

Brees also became only the third quarterback in NFL history to post a passer rating of 100 or better in three consecutive games in the same postseason. Troy Aikman (1992, 1995) and Joe Montana (1988, 1989) are the only others to do it.

During the 2009 postseason, Brees threw 102 passes without an interception. That’s the most pass attempts in a single postseason without an INT. The previous record was 89 by Aikman in 1992. Here’s a list of the most attempts in a single postseason without an INT.

    102 … Drew Brees, Saints (2009)
    89 … Troy Aikman, Cowboys (1992)
    87 … Steve Young, 49ers (1994)
    86 … Daryle Lamonica, Raiders (1968)
    83 … Joe Montana, 49ers (1989)
    81 … Tom Brady, Patriots (2004)

Brees completed 70.6 percent of his pass attempts with eight TDs. Only Montana in 1989 also completed over 70 percent of his passes in a postseason (with 75 more attempts) and didn’t throw an interception.

Brees’s 72 completions this postseason are fourth-most ever in a single playoffs – behind Warner in four games in 2008, Tom Brady in 2007 and Jim Kelly in 1993. His eight TDs are also fourth-most ever, behind Montana’s 11 in 1989, Warner’s 11 in 2008 and Manning’s nine in 2003.

Izzy, you should bulk mail that post to every talking head at ESPN. Maybe then he can get some g-d respect, since none of them are capable of doing their own homework.

Tonight on ESPN Radio, Tim Hasselbeck said he was surprised at Brees' accuracy. Apparently no one told him Drew ONLY SET A NEW RECORD FOR ACCURACY this season!

    Jiminy Christmas!

I wonder what the front office of the San Diego Chargers are thinking. You can have Philip Rivers and his dumb Alabama ass.

I am so happy for Brees. What a class act. I can tell you first hand that he does go to New Orleans schools and give his time and money to help kids and it isn't for publicity. If the Saints didn't win the Super Bowl he may never have gotten his due from the national media. This victory gives him a legit shot at the Hall of Fame if he can continue to put up great numbers. I'm glad Ricky Jackson went in the Hall because he deserved it and played hurt--remember how he played right after hemorrhoid surgery. Now that is really putting your a$$ on the line baby! But Ricky, although lovable, had his problems with child support. So far, Brees has done it all the right way and is a very good spokesman for our city. We have been fooled before by some athletes like Tiger Woods, but I think Brees is the real deal and I hope he ends up in the Hall of Fame as the Saints best QB of all time.

i heard on Ott's show today that he is at the children's cancer wing in whatever hospital it is in N.O. this morning instead of taking a vacation. There is no other like him in the world, and we are damn lucky to have him in this state.

I think Kurt Warner is in that same vain.

But Brees is taking it to a new level. And he doesn't even want the pub from it either.

Amen. He has developed a special relationship with one little boy who has cancer. On national T.V. he gave the kid a shout out by name telling him that the Superbowl win was for him. It was a great thing to do. I'm sure he made that poor little boy feel special and hopefully he lifted his spirits.
