Man, I hear you about the homesickness. I spent 3 1/2 years in Houston and we just moved back home about a month ago (I've still got boxes in my office at home that I haven't unpacked yet).

Friends in Houston looked at us like we were crazy when we announced we were going back to the New Orleans area. And, on one hand, I know what they mean. Our son just turned one and we'll be thinking about school in a few years. I've got to say, the schools in Houston (especially the one where my wife worked and where our son probably would have gone for at least elementary school) are head and shoulders above anything Louisiana has. I've got a good job here, but I probably would have made twice as much money over an entire career if I had stayed in Houston.

But I couldn't stomach the thought of my son only knowing his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins from pictures and once-a-year gatherings. I got to where I hated -- I mean really hated with a gut twisting reaction -- the 5 hour drive between Houston and our families' homes. And don't even talk about the food. Even Brennan's in Houston wasn't close to the real thing. Houston never was, and could never be, home. Did you know they charge admission to festivals there, including "Mardi Gras" in Galveston? Admission. To a festival. How insane is that?

So now we've had our first Christmas back home. It was a low key affair but we got to see everybody and ate way too much and drank a little too much and it was a blast. And when I go to work tomorrow it won't be with a bunch of people who don't even know when LSU! next plays football.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I found this place when I was lost in the East Texas wilderness. It felt like home when the place I was living didn't. There was talk about sports, of course, but also food and Free Speech Alley and if I said the Indian Mounds everybody here would know exactly what I meant.

So, yeah, I hear you about the homesickness. It sucks if you can't come back for good to cure it. I'm sure glad I was able to.
