The federal govt. should not be funding this period. It has no business getting tax payer dollars.

That's what I thought as well. I don't have any reason for or against stem cell research. I just object, especially in rough economy with no "summer of recovery" happening, to use our dollars to do it. If times were better and everyone wanted it, fine.

because this research is important that is why it's ridiculous. what if there is a cure for cancer or hiv, behind the stem cell research? how many lives can be saved?

Adult stem cells and other forms of non-embryonic stems cells have shown actual results while embryonic stem cells are just a pie-in-the-sky promise. Therapeutic advances have been made in every area of stem cell research except embryonic. Private dollars can still be used for research. Why throw good taxpayer dollars after a research that hasn't produced the promised results.

I read an article concerning this, and the gripe the judge had with it according to that article was because it destroyed embryos. If death is going to occur either way, then why should the American people pay for it?

It is important. But not a Federal Govt. issue.

You are wrong about stem cell research. It is cutting edge medical science with potential for many cures and with advances being made every day. The USA should be at the forefront of this research, but ultra-conservative politicians catering to the religious right are trying to make us take a back seat to the European and Asian countries also working in the fields. The patents will go to them followed by the money and the US falls futher behind in trade deficits and in technology.

People who complain about embryonic stem cell research are just trying to impose their religious views on everybody. It's America and you can't do that. Republican anti-science, religious-based policies regarding stem cell-research, evolution, and creationism may help them win votes with the anti-abortion crowd, but its killing them with thinking people, especially young thinking people.
