I know you're frustrated JayB. We all are/were frustrated with the way the team looked throughout the game. We didn't really do anything "wowzers"-related on offense ('cept for T. Toliver's RAC TD's). Our O-line didn't dominate the U-Dub D-line. We gave up loads of yards on defense and needed turnovers to turn the Huskies away. It was annoying to see Washington put up the final 7 points with no time on the clock (31-16 looks a lot better than 31-23). BUT! Didn't this game look VERY SIMILAR to the opening game against Arizona St???? (leave the Katrina aftermath defense for arguements sake and simply look at the game itself) We had a new DC in Pelini and faced a Pac-10 team that put up loads of offensive yards against what was billed as a "stout defensive cordinator". But as the games went on, Pelini's defense really started showing that it was ledgit. So, for me personally, after being one that vocally wanted Pelini to pack his bags after the first 2 games in that '05 season, I've LEARNED from my mistakes and vowed to be more level-headed when seeing a new DC come on board. Chavis is a proven defensive coach and even though they had a summer to work on the new defense, it's STILL a procedure that ultimately takes time. This was a "trap game". Forget that Washington was 0-12 last year. They had a horrible and over-rated coach (Willingham) that has pretty much failed in every head coaching job he's had since his initial Standford gig. Locker was lost for the season and they were in disarray. It's clear that they have skilled and talented players and needed to play their BEST game in nearly 2 seasons to still come :08 from losing 31-16 to an SEC team that looked flat on offense at times and a defense that looked like they were in need of a nap. Miles still has an uncanny knack for halftime adjustments and if you look at the splits statistically between 1st and 2nd half, it shows that adjustments were made. Take away that last, meaningless drive by Washington to close out the game and the defense faired very well compaired to the 1st half. YES we ALL wanted to paste a Pac-10 team but we didn't. We just won the game. #22 Iowa avoided losing to Northern Iowa thanks to TWO blocked FG attempts in the last :03 of the game! Ohio St. NEARLY lost to NAVY! First game "blah's" happen. We're breaking in a new defensive scheme that I'm confident will be MUCH improved by season's end and GREATLY improved in year 2 of the Chavis system. We traveled 2 time zones to play a game against a team that didn't have to worry about attending classes during this "game week". All Washington did was practice and rest. If our defense still gives up yards hand-over-fist through the first 5 games of the season, THEN I'll worry. But not until. And another positive to look at: Our defense gave up yards but we also forced turnovers. That is another similarity between Chavis' first game as LSU DC and Pelini's...
his teammates were razzing him, basically telling him he should be proud (you know b/c JJ actually did play a good game). they got a smile out of him. when you're one of the new leaders on your team and your senior teammates are coming up to you and saying "you must think you're one bad 19 yr old" and such, the appropriate response is to smile. lots of other stuff to pick on, this is way too nit picky.
I'm very okay with JJ smiling and laughing after a win, especially when he played well. This was his first start really with "his" team. Look for him to get even better as the season progresses. Hopefully more smiles and laughing to follow as well :thumb:
:cry:but...but...I wanted to pound them into the ground and laugh and high five my friends and show everybody how my team is the baddest of the bad and they wouldn't let me have all that fun and now I'm worried that we might lose a game down the road and I'll be all embarrassed because someone else's team might be better than mine. IT'S NOT FAIR!!!:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:
I sure saw that in bama's players last night! I thought they were auditioning for dancing with the stars. every play had a special dance.
If LSU players are smiling after a game, then likely it means LSU won the game. "QUIT SMILING LSU PLAYERS!!!!!" - LSU "Fan"
I'm gonna put myself in JJ's shoes for a minute.... I'm 19 years old and I'm the starting quarterback at LSU... I just threw 3 touchdown passes and led my team to a victory on National TV. I bet I'd be all jacked up after the game too. Pardon the kid for enjoying the best years of his life. :crystal::geaux::crystal::geaux::crystal:
