:tigereye: Depends on how realistic your expectations were. The LSU coaching staff and myself were worried about this game vs. Washington and we are very happy to come away with a victory. From my perspective, you should be happy with LSU's performance last night... especially JJ's performance... he got off to a really bad start (3-of-9, 33%) but settled down and finished 11-of-19 (57.9%), 172 yards, 3 TDs, ZERO INTERCEPTIONS. Again, ZERO INTERCEPTIONS. Remember last year? JJ is that same age now that J-Lee was last year.
I couldn't agree more! Enough blaming our QB! There were a lot of defensive mistakes. That is what hurt us, making this a "sloppy win."
JJ played the game that was called by the coaches. As vanilla as the game plan was, I thought he played pretty well. The coaches finally started to throw the ball and this took the safeties out of the box, which is where they spent most of the first half. This was textbook Miles, 3 yards and a cloud of dust in the first half. You would note that because Toliver had some success, and the safeties dropped back, we had success running the ball late with KW. Another classic Miles, we only opened up the playbook enough to put the game away. Had we come out throwing the ball and hitting crossing patterns, we could have hung 50+ on that team. TT appears to have matured into the No. 2 WR. Teams won't be able to double both TT and LaFell. Someone will be open, and very few, if any, will have two corners that can run man to man with either of these WRs. Expect another vanilla shake against Vandy, maybe with some rainbow sprinkles. We won't see swirls, whipped cream, or cherries for several weeks. Until we decide to hit on all cylinders in Week 1 (like several other top 10 teams that hung 50+), we best not schedule any national contenders to open up the season against. FWIW, Florida showed they are the best team in the country. They came out firing, ready to show the country who they are. Come stop us. We used to play like that, but that team attitude seems to be long gone. Back on point, JJ played well within the constraints that he was alotted. He took a couple of big hits, that he shouldn't have to be exposed to. He will learn from watching film that he needs to hit the deck and save his body from harm. This kid just turned 19. While he appears to be poised and mature beyond his years, he will make some mistakes. I am happy for him. He got a road win in the season opener. He has the right to enjoy it. They will be back on the practice field and breaking down film. He won't be able to enjoy it for long. His focus will turn to improving on his mistakes and preparing for an improved Vanderbilt, who won 45-0 over Western Carolina.
there's also the little fact (which i honestly was unaware of until they mentioned it last night) that during the past 2 weeks the LSU players could only spend a maximum of 20 hours with the coach since they started class on Aug. 24th - While Washington doesn't start class till September 30th and could spend as much time as they wanted at practice and with the coaches.
People were throwing Pelini under the bus after the lose to Tennesse in his first season. Things worked out with him.
Agree. I hope he had a great time and think it's great he was relaxed enough to enjoy it. He'll get to watch the film soon enough.
What did you expect him to do? Cry and moan? It wasn't pretty but we won, and the problems we had did not have anything to do with his performance. Let's give the team a chance to improve before we start to panic.
This is true! Jefferson is only 19, right? Let's hope as the season goes on he'll get more comfortable! What bothered me was the lack of emotion on our side lines.....it wasn't only the team that was flat, the coaches were flat, and if there were 25,000 LSU fans there, I sure couldn't tell by the sound....guess it was just too long of a trip for everyone! Guess I wanted some of Holt's excitement to spill over to our side...that guy was intense the whole game, like Miles use to be.
I am often embarrassed by the attitudes of a lot of our "fans" around here. It's pretty pathetic that a win gets some people so upset. I was a little disappointed that LSU didn't look like world beaters last night, but it's a long season and I'm looking forward to next week. JayB: Get some sleep before posting after a game.
