As I said, this is a gentleman's game, and Mr. Daly is far from a gentleman. If this was NASCAR, then who gives a rats ass.
I agree with TB3. I don't think Daly is the best guy in the world, but he isn't bottoming out the tour. Ratings go way up when he is in contention. 100s of guys smoke on the course. Angel Cabrera and Darren Clarke smoke cigars the entirety of their rounds. Just if I had a kid, it wouldn't bother me if we watched this big, fat guy lump around the course in a miserable heap (which is what Daly has become), but it would maybe bother me if I watched Tiger hook his drive into the woods on 17 and yell (GOD DAMNIT TIGER, WHY IN THE F*** DID YOU DID THAT), or any of the other pleasantries he often has to say after a bad shot. Granted, it doesn't bother me at all, as Tiger is one of my fav athletes of all-time, but I can see where it would bother someone else. It's a gentleman's game, blah, blah, blah... Until I see a set rule in the rule-book, or until I see a definition of what "gentleman" is, then you can't discriminate anyone.
Casey, I'll concede the point on Tiger and his language. They all mutter a 4 letter word or two after a bad shot, but since the cameras and boom mikes are on Tiger constantly, his get picked up far more frequently. And like you wrote, he doesn't mutter his.
The difference is Ive yet to see JD do any of those examples way more than any other player. He is just on TV more because of how popular he is.
If the other players were as focused and intense as Tiger is, they might not get their azzes handed to them week after week.
In order to be on TV, you have to play. John's currently #182 on the money list and is having to rely on sponsors exemptions to get into tournaments. Unless he gets his game squared away you won't be seeing him on the PGA Tour.
True. But I am going to miss that sweet mullet. And CO, I agreed with most of what you said, just disagreeing with isl that the PGA needs to do something about it.
I disagree. Tiger intimidates everyone else and is more intense than everyone when he is playing, but Tiger has more down-time without playing golf, at all, than any other golfer in the world. He normally doesn't touch a club at all from Nov-Jan and fishes, sky-dives, etc... The other players typically work on their game in the offseason. It may be because it's lonely at the top and he doesn't need to work as hard, but he doesn't slave to his swing 24/7. That would be Vijay.
It's a shame that JD has reached this point in his career, but all of his wounds have been self inflicted. I met JD the week after he won the PGA at Crooked Stick. Spent about 15 minutes with him & others in the CBS compound @ Castle Pines. He was still on Cloud 9 and trying to grasp his new found fame & fortune. Unfortunately the bottle, enormous gambling debts, and ex wives & alimony payments have gotten the best of John. What a shame.
