the problem is the 1 and done player has affects beyond his year. a program can only sign a certain # of players in a period of time (note how that is different from the old maximum # of scholarships on a team at any one time). so, sure, you can be a good team one year because of the one and done player but then the team bottoms out in subsequent years. a program can handle some one and done players (if there isnt a loss of too many players by other means--transfer, dismissal, etc) and ctj has tried to recruit some.
We all knew this would be a tough year. It may be tougher than any of us would like to accept, but we have to realize it takes a while to build up a foundation of players that are the core of the team. Before we can go out and start getting 1 and done players there has to be a solid foundation built up first. Once TJ gets the consistent level of recruits that will sustain the program for a couple of years at a time, then he can add that special 1 and done player that takes us over the top. Patience is the key. If TJ starts adding 1 and done players too soon, or gets too many of them then it becomes and up and down cycle. One good year 1-2 bad years and so on. If there is a foundation of solid players that are 3-4 yr kids and he adds a 1 and done every other yr or so the program stays stable. Once that is done then he will be able to get even more quality players to keep the program at a highly competitive level. I think next year will be what shows the rewards for what he has been doing over the past 2 yrs in recruiting.
I guess I should have just quoted you and said I agree, but I was going for the more of us that say it the more it might start to sink in with others.:thumb:
i dont think it's necessary to blame someone. brady is gone (thank goodness) and it's not his fault. we lost 3 great starters last year, two of which are in the nba. johnson has been here a couple of years and people are saying he cant recruit. the thing is, only a few select teams get blue chip recruits every year. he has an excellent class coming in next year, and in due time he'll get his share of 5 star recruits that some are so obsessed with. after we build some depth i think tj will consistently produce a competitive team. people just have to calm down and give him time.
someone has to say it. like clair already pointed out, it's pretty hard to go without a win in the SEC, it's not like this is the ACC for christ's sake. and while the SEC is a LOT better this season, LSU has been flat-out awful. there is NO reason LSU should be as low on talent as they are right now... johnson knew he'd be losing a LOT of players from his SEC champ team, it was his job to get someone (anyone) to supplement the talent he planned on recruiting. he failed. maybe he completely does not care how bad LSU does this season and he wants to start over -- that would be a pretty damn bold move though. i agree with the non-caucasian, non-4.0 student athletes. i don't think it takes a rocket scientist to see that basketball is dominated by black athletes -- i'm not a PC person; it doesn't take one to see that fact. recruiting student athlete geniuses is a good thing if you're stanford. LSU isn't stanford and the rocket scientist basketball players wouldn't go to LSU for academics anyway. quit kidding yourselves and hit new orleans and baton rouge for players. i'm not talkng about going out and recruiting thugs, but there are some really good "C" students out there.
Who did he not recruit that would have helped this year? If you are going to attack his philosophy bring the alternative. Who is the big fish that he let slip away? Not throwing schollys at sub-par players seems to be a pretty smart to me.
