The confusion stems from lack of reading comprehension. Yes, the JJ to RR pass was absolutely the PLAY of the game. The PASS from JL to RR is what this thread is about. A perfect pass, a bullet. And yes, you're right...one of the most impressive things about it was how he stepped up, set his feet, and fired. Beautiful pass. It iced the game, but yeah, JJ's pass to RR for 75 yds and a TD was the PLAY of the game.
He threw him open. It takes a very good throw to make that pass and give the ball just enough loft to get over the DB and drop to the receiver.
Exactly, Randle was double-covered and wasn't initially open on the play. Lee sidestepped the rush, moved up into the pocket, and Randle double-moved and got right into a gap between two Alabama defenders. The lower defender running with Randle stopped, almost thinking Lee was going to tuck and run (he was close to going over the LOS). Lee saw the break, set up to throw and let it fly, and Randle caught it right in stride between the two Bama DBs. Pretty pass, awesome catch. Our QBs (Lee and Jefferson) did something in the 2nd half of this game they haven't done very much of all year; they started hitting receivers right on target, in the hands, in the numbers, in stride. Locating the ball right for maximum success by our receivers has been such a struggle this year for our QBs. They must be putting in extra reps in practice, because it finally seems like they are putting the ball right where it needs to be. Let's hope it continues.
You see what happens when Jarret Lee throws coming forward into his pass instead of throwing off his back foot. To me, his whole problem is the way he constantly throws off his back foot. That one pass he threw in the first half that was almost picked off on the left sideline, he looked like Favre at Favre's worst. Funny because Gary Danielson said he wasn't Brett Favre, and that Lee wasn't talented enough to make that throw. However when Lee steps into his throw moving up into the pocket, the kid has a rocket. Great throw, but I thought the pass to Randle from Jefferson was the best throw I have seen all year. That is what happens when we hit our receivers in stride, and they actually catch it.
Failure to execute does not always equal lack of coaching - of course if that's what you want to see you will. The most inportant thing about the JJ to RR play was that RR was able to catch the ball in stride and motor on. That's been missing for the most part all year; and i've said that IMO that is all that has stood between us and the BIG TROPHY. TT, RR and RS in the open field catching the ball with speed are dangerous. The play of the game was the 4th down flip reverse, IMO.
Actually the play of the game was not a play at all but rather a series. The series at the end of the 1st half where JJ started throwing lasers on the money is what swung the momentum and gave JJ the confidence he needed to perform like he did in the 2nd half. It was possibly the best game management decision Miles has made all yr. Deciding to let JJ open it up instead of just sitting on it to run out the clock, was all but brilliant and what set the tone for the teams 2nd half performance. Miles showed he had confidence in JJ and the team, and they accepted the challenge.
My bad. I was actually talking about that same play, but didn't realize Fishhead was speaking about the Jarrett Lee pass instead. Yeah, no doubt the JJ play is way better than the JL play, although under the circumstances the JL play was awesome.
Great Point...LaSalle.....lee does throw a very beautifull ball...strong arm, nice tight spiral......his problem comes fromm down low...with his feet, when he gets happy feet...you can wait for the bad throw.....but when he is settled and steps into it....it's a thing of beauty....two opposite ends of the spectrum.....if we could only keep him on the better end of the spectrum.....oh wait that would be called....wait for it.....CONCISITENCY!!
