at least JJ threw for over 100 yards in the spring game... he was only able to do that in 4 of 12 games last regular season: UNC, Bama, Ole Miss, Arkansas (including the bowl game vs A&M, he did it in 5 of 13 games)
Even though I told myself I wouldn't get excited about JJ ever again, I'm sort of on the train. At least I know this is the last year he can ever break my heart.
oh, and to add to that: JJ was not able to throw for 100 yards in the 2010 spring game (even though he had 9 more passing attempts than this year) so being that JJ did throw for over 100 yards in the 2011 spring game, hopefully that means he'll throw for over 100 yards much more often this season
This. The team only had, what, 10-15 practices in the spring before the game? Despite that, I did notice improvement in the scrimmage. His footwork was noticeably better, and he appeared more decisive (esp. on plays where he tucked it and ran). If you were looking for the QBs to go in that game and air it out all over the place, then you don't know Les very well.
while it's true that we didn't throw it as much this spring game as we did last spring game, it's worth noting that the most impressive improvement from the 2010 spring game to the 2011 spring game was the improvement in our total passing yards per passing attempt: JJ's yards/att were up 78% (4.09 ypa to 7.29 ypa) all QBs combined yards/att were up 47% (4.73 ypa to 6.97 ypa)
I wasn't expecting us to suddenly become a pass first team. Most know that the scrimmage is scripted to a degree to work on certain areas that the coaches want to address. I was simply hoping to see a better completion rate with some short timing routes and simple reads. Nothing mind blowing, just better production from the receivers and Jefferson given some of the hype we had been hearing. It is true there haven't been that many official practices, but opening day with Oregon doesn't seem that far away. How many practices until game day? Is this a leap year and does it matter?:yelwink2:
You are predisposed to thinking JJ sucks and there's not a damn thing JJ can or will do that will change your mind, short of suddenly turning into Tom Brady or Drew Brees.
This isn't true at all. I hope and pray he leads us to a championship. But he has to obviously improve from last year. I think on this we can all agree. We are being told by reputable people that his footwork, drops, etc., have improved. Great! But can he perform consistently in a game, week in and week out. He has the advantage of being a decent runner when his receivers are covered. The proof isn't at practice, it isn't in drills, it isn't even during scrimmages against your own team. The proof is on game day when it counts. We can't say he has drastically improved until he actually does and that won't be determined until we are well into the season. P.S. J.J. runs better than Tom Brady, but I slight Drew Brees for no one!
personally, i want to see 100% improvement in JJ's passing TDs and passing yards: instead of the 1,411 passing yards and 7 passing TDs in 2010, I want to see 2,822 passing yards and 14 passing TDs this season but i'll take improvement where i can get it. yes, JJ's completion rate was down this spring game (28.6%) compared to the 34.8% he had last spring game (he was 56.5% for the 2010 season), and there was no improvement in TDs and INTs (he had 0 TDs, 1 INT in both spring games), but i'm at least happy to see that JJ threw for 102 yards on 14 attempts this spring game (7.29 ypa), which is a 77% improvement over the 94 yards on 23 attempts (4.09 ypa) he had in the previous spring game. it was also nice to see that all QBs combined threw for 251 yards on 36 attempts (6.97 ypa), which is a 47% improvement over the 227 yards on 48 attempts (4.73 ypa) we had in the previous spring game of course, when i look at Alabama's spring game, i'm envious they had both of their QBs throw for 250 yards each, but at the same time, you can look over at Tennessee, where their QB just had a nice season last year (four 300-yard passing games)... and in their recent spring game, he only went an embarrassing 5-for-30
Yeah, remember last year when McIlroy had something ridiculous like 500yds passing in the bama spring game, and everyone was wondering whether that meant that he would be in the Heisman race or if their secondary just sucked? Turns out their secondary just sucked. Also, John Brantley had worse numbers than JJ in the UF spring game. And he's been annointed as the best in the QB SEC by some of our own fans, and their new OC is supposedly some kind of genius. You should pretty much always hope for unremarkable stats coming out of spring scrimmage.
