LSU finds itself in a strange situation for recruiting. There are two coaches out there that left after successful experiences at LSU, and can now come back and claim credit for that success to new recruits. It was different when coaches were run out of town. Except for the way that Saban left (and returned), no one could really complain that either he or Jimbo were bad coaches. We can debate how "great" they each were, or how much was "their" success as opposed to LSU's, but no one is going to say they were bad coaches. The other problem that LSU faces is that other schools are realizing that they now have to work to get a recruit out of LA. Years ago, LSU was not very good at keeping talent in the state, and some big name schools simply had to make an offer to get a recruit. As LSU became more successful, and more aggressive in recruiting state players, those big name schools started to realize that they could no longer simply make an offer and pull a kid out of the state. As a result, you are starting to see a bigger push by the outside schools. Throw that together with the fact that this looks like a down year for LA recruits (at least according to the "experts"), and Miles has his work cut out for him. IMHO, Miles will do fine as long as he stays with what's worked for him in the past. Stay positive, sell the school, sell his character, and hold recruits to their committments.
is there something wrong with this? Because I'm pretty sure that this is a tactic that is used by every coach in the country.
Even if a coach tells the "truth", almost all of us hear what ever we want to hear... It's part of the human condition!
I agree that Jimbo can and will use Russell’s draft status as a recruiting tool. I wouldn't fault him for that either. I was just expressing my opinion that it was Russell’s natural talent, more so than Jimbo’s development, that got him where he is. I believe that other top QB coaches could have had similar or better success. I do not have any regrets with the staff currently in place and feel that we have made an upgrade. How much will we miss Jimbo? Only time will tell but I think will be just fine.
I thank and respect Jimbo Fisher as a recruiter and OC. But i cant help but feel like we underachieved with our offense in the big games the past few years. I think Jimbo has to take some of that responsibility because i think he gets too conservative in pressure situations. And his offensive playcalling a little predictable. But ultimately it is your offensive line that determines your success on offense. Even the best backs cant make yards if their are two guys waiting for them when they get the ball. And same goes for the passing game. The worst playcall can be a success if you have enough time to throw and if you give the running back a big enough hole it doesnt matter if they knew the play was coming. Probably a combination of all of the above. Thats why i am hoping to see improvement in our offensive line more than anything else.
What we lose in terms of recruits not knowing a whole lot about Crowton compared to Jimbo will soon be forgotten once Crowton shows his offenses can be just as effective.
