    Both are RFAs.

I started a thread on the Saints chat board and started a fire storm it would appear.

My take is that Jermon Bushrod is good enough to make our starting LT and that Brown is expendable for draft picks.

I believe the Seahawks will bite on a trade (or sign him as a tendered RFA) since they are in desperate need of signing an LT to protect the QB they end up drafting at the 6 spot in the first round.

If the Saints/Seahawks tender Brown 3.3 million, then the Seahawks would have to give the Saints a 1st and 3rd in order to get him. If the tender is more than 2.7 million but less than 3.3, then it's simply a first round pick. The Seahawks have the #14 pick in the draft as well. So it sets up nicely for them to make this deal. A franchise QB and a solid LT is a great start to rebuilding an offense (and Pete Carroll knows that more than most, he had that his whole career at USC).

So the raging debate is can the Saints rely on Bushrod as their future LT, or is that too big a risk to take, trying to protect the best QB in the league's blindside? Or getting at least a 1st round pick (at #14 no less) would be worth bolstering your defense with a young stud at DT/DE/OLB/FS?

We can sign Bushrod for considerably less than Brown obviously.

yeah i would keep Bushrod, he proved himself, and he is only going to get better. Brown is expendable at this point, and the LT is the most sought after offensive line position, especially for teams who have their franchise quarterback.

well i'm not sure that we'll get as high as a 1 and 3 for brown but my take is very similar to yours.

bushrod is serviceable but struggled against some premier DE's. he's solid but not great. brown on the other hand is probably the same but is way overrated imo. so, i'm all for getting what you can for him. plus he's injury prone and causes lots of stupid yellow hankies to appear.

the fact that he's a two time pro bowler is a joke, it's like the voters just look at who the top offense is and figure well brees is doing well, his LT must have something to do with that. when actually brees is so heady and senses the rush and knows when to get rid, that he makes his line look better than they are.

but the fact that he's a two time pro bowler plays into our hands driving up his value. i say get rid of him and get what you can. miami had the no name defense in the 70's, we have the no name O line. just plug someone else in and spend the money somewhere else.

I'd like us to lock Bushrod up long term if we could do it at a good value, and put a 1st and 3rd round tender on Brown. If no one gives up that for him, let him come back for a season and find out what we have while we develop Bushrod further. 3.3 million for one year is a great value for the Saints to keep Jammal Brown for a year.

I certainly don't have an issue with that.

I hope we get someone to bite on the 1st and 3rd, however.

This is similar to the Chargers' dilemma with Brees and Rivers. What to do? What to do?

    I can go two ways:

1)I don't think that Bushrod is a long term solution, but I have heard that Brown's knees are giving out. If the Saints could land a first round choice for him, better to get the picks now than nothing later. Bushrod is serviceable for now.

    2) Brown and Bushrod protect Brees blindspot and they are arguably the most important players on the team after Brees himself. I don't think it's a bad idea to be more than adequately covered at LT.

Keep both of them. What happens if they trade Brown and Bushrod goes down with an injury? Its called insurance nd the Saints at this point can affor the premiums

Lots of teams these days go with 1 less O-lineman when the active/inactive list comes out. 3 OTs that cover both LT and RT is much more common now. The Saints did it this past season. Saints are fortunate to have Strief that is able to play LT and RT.

Check out NFL depth charts. You won't see many 3 deep LTs.

Strief can play LT if the starter is going to be back in a week. Any longer than that and the Saints will be looking for a free agent. I see no reason not to keep both of them, especially since both are affordable this year. Let's bring 'em both back, let Brown play lights out and boost his value, then trade him for the highest pick we can get before his knees really give out.

It's always better to trade a player too soon rather than too late...
