I agree. If Lee is too dangerous, then Jefferson is is equal by being too conservative. A running game will certainly help each, but Les' QB recruiting has not been exactly been great.
How is he really being stubborn in this situation? What's the alternative? The only alternative would likely be Lee? We tried that last year due to injury in the LA Tech game. The result was by far the poorest performance by an LSU QB last year (especially considering the competition we were playing). Garrett has no experience. And Shep could have possibly been an option, but he asked for a position change (not because he didn't think he could eventually play QB), but because he didn't see the field for one play against Florida. He switched because he wants to be on the field NOW. Oddly enough, he didn't get one touch against Penn State in the bowl game. If anything, you could blame Miles and co. for their lack of development with players or for not recruiting more possible QBs.
Neither of these two guys should be starting for LSU or any other SEC team right now. We had a perfectly good SEC-ready QB recruited by Les. He decided to act a fool and blow his opportunity. You can question whether he should have picked up a backup option for QB (and given how RP ran off at the mouth before he even got here, I would have definitely hedged that bet). Les has recruited plenty of QBs since then, so I wouldn't blame the current situation entirely on that.
I think all of this is true. However, it is also true that Jefferson and Lee have just not developed. Doesn't mean they won't have the light come on. But for a school like LSU, I just don't expect it to take quite this long to find a QB that can at least manage the game without making stupid mistakes or playing so conservatively that they stall the offense. Like most things, it's not a simple situation. Sure would be nice if somebody can find the right light switch, though. Because there is a LOT of offensive potential on the team just waiting for a leader.
Totally agree. I'll take it a step further and say that if Crowton actually lived up to a fraction of the hype surrounding him when he got here, he could get at least one of these guys SEC-ready by this point. I really hope the spring game was an aberration, but it looked like all their old instincts rose to the surface. The excuses have run out and it's time for someone to step up.
He did bring in the first or second ranked QB in the whole country, depending on who you ask, one who would've just graduated had he not been kicked off the team. Neither Jefferson nor Lee were blue chips, but neither should have even entered the discussion until their junior year, aka this upcoming one. I think the fault is more on the development of these QBs since they've arrived. I just don't think Crowton has done a good job bringing the young QBs up to speed in a timely manner. There's still time though. As for Les's QB recruiting as a whole, Garrett looks like a good one, and Zach Lee has great arm strength. We'll have to wait and see.
