I think you are overestimating Trump's popularity in the Republican party right now. As recently as last year roughly 65-70% of the party identified as followers of Trump over being a Republican. A few weeks ago that number was around 45%. I think most reasonable Republicans know that he has too much baggage and cannot win again. They want a winner and like their chances with DeSantis, Pence or Haley much better than Trump. Frankly, I think Liz Cheney could win right now and I might even vote for her myself. That woman has more balls than most of the men on Capital Hill. Trump's grip is slipping and slipping quickly. This week alone you had McConnell, Chris Christie, Marc Short (Pence's former chief of staff) and several other Republicans publicly rebuking Trump or the Trump inspired RNC decision to censure Kinzinger and Cheney. McConnell will outlive Trump politically and McConnell knows that.
