The president of the United States is the commander-in-chief for the District of Columbia National Guard. Command is exercised through the secretary of defense and the commanding general, Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ), District of Columbia National Guard.
Just to bring us up to the minute....in the Great Insurrection of January 6, 2021, it is now 11:35am on January 6, 2022, and no one arrested in that incident has been charged with insurrection.

So, tell me, if trump didn't intend the violence why did he just stand by and do nothing, when he could have and should have sent in the National Guard, after the Capital Police had been overwhelmed?

The DC national guard was already activated that days prior to the riot. Ask the commanders.... Trump approved this days before Jan 6th. Need any other lies debunked?
I'm not a fan of Merrick Garland's. I think he's a milquetoast. Aside from that, donald trump has already been impeached by Congress. Only some partisan repugnants stood in the way of punishment.
"Activated" in what sense? Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller told the DC Guard to stand down on January 4, and that all anti-riot activity by the DCNG on January 6 would have to wait his explicit approval. The DC Guard was still under that order three hours after the Capitol Police had been overrun. D.C. National Guard Commander Gen. William J. Walker stated that prior to the January 6 attack on Congress, the Pentagon had stripped him of his normal authority to dispatch troops to the Capitol. So, once again, it's YOU who's lying.
