LSU has not really tried to be an option team. LSU runs just enough option to force the rival defensive coordinators to be ready for it and making them use valuable practice time preparing for it. And when we use it effectively, it can catch a opponent by surprise.

Well, CLM is certainly committed to it. The last article I read, he practically went out of his way to justify it. I'm still a bit befuddled that he makes such a point of saying Jefferson can run it when he has not done it well for a long time, now. JJ runs a good bootleg, a descent delay screen, and he scrambles well.

Option? So far, not so much. Which makes it far less effective eating up opponent practice time, don't you think?

We play it but it's not exactly our bread and butter play is it? What number of option plays did we run last week?

Jefferson also runs a good quarterback draw, just not very good keeping or pitching on the option.

Well, Nick always ran some option just for that reason. He thought it was important to complicate the rival DC's week and he's probably right. If it's in our playbook, then it's another read for those playing assignment defense and a certain number of practice plays spent defending the option. For those that defend the option by stacking the box, they set themselves up for the pass out of the option to single-covered defenders.

Assuming we have an effective passer . . .

I'm ready to see us run the play shep has scored on twice but let JJ keep it bootleg out and throw deep to RR or toliver

Nobody has seen Shepard throw a pass in two seasons . . . but you know the halfback pass is in the playbook somewhere. When it happens its going to catch some defensive back with his pants down.
