The Celtics showed last year that it was 'broke'. This is an aging team that got beaten by Lebron (single handedly) 2 years ago and then by the Celtics last year. With Wallace one year older, Rip one year older, Chauncey one year older, this team is built to win right now. I know Iverson's age, but he has an expiring contract that Billups doesn't, so it gives them flexibility to get younger. Don't judge a trade on how they performed against the Celtics. Let's see how that matchup stacks up in a few months when Iverson knows the offense, etc... right now. These things take time and at least Detroit did it at the right time, unlike Phoenix who waited until late last season to get Shaq, then stumbled into the playoffs with no momentum. I like the move, even if Iverson were to implode, because I just think they had no chance to win it all with their roster as it stood, so you might as well roll the dice and maybe you'll get snake eyes.
I love Iverson to death, one of my favorite players. But he's all fluff. He operates best as the one and only player on the team that is the go to guy. I would have like to have seen Iverson and Shaq together at their prime. That would have been the combo to pair up with Iverson to win a championship. I found the chemisty wierd when he was at Denver, but this is actually worse. Detroit is a hard-nosed grind it out team that plays good D, and Iverson is on the opposite end of the sprectrum.
the problem is none of those things imo. The problem is he is not now, nor will he ever be a PG. When Detroit wises up and puts Rip on the bench as 6th man and moves Iverson to 2-guard, where he can play off the ball, they will be fine. Iverson as the 1 in Detroit's offense is a no-no. He is best working off the ball.
Same problem with Denver playing the 1. Lack of chemistry. It doesn't work. Hamilton's too good to be sitting the bench for any length of time. It wasn't a good trade. Go after a quality PG vs going after the ticket/merchandise selling Iverson.
Tell that to Ginoboli. You can come off the bench and still play your 32-35 minutes a game and have a huge impact.
Thats how it works, but I am a bit confused with the waiver wire, it could be like the NFL, but I doubt it. Anyhow, the Celtics want to take a run at Dyess, for good reason, they need him. Dont worry about Iverson, its just 2 games. If he needs a sit down, I know someone is more than welcome to sit down with him to explain how things work in Detroit. Rip doesnt need to come off the bench because you need his energy from the tip. They will be fine, they will be in the ECF again, will they win it. I dont know, cant say right now. But the small line up with work to their advantage. Its only 2 games, Iverson will be a plus for this team, especially in scoring situations.
On the 2nd night of a back-to-back, Detroit beat the Lakers by 11 on the road. Imagine how much they would have won by if they didn't have a scrub like Iverson anchoring them down, right?
Looks like the trade is working out for both teams. Denver is now 4-1 with Billups and got a substantial eye-opener with their win on the road at the Boston Garden.
And we just keep chugging along, beating the King last night holding him to 8 of 21 shooting and 0-4 from the arc. Rasheed-21-17 boards Iverson-23pts-4ast Hamilton 16pts-6ast
