Here is the crux of it: Russell Shepard will get 15-20 snaps at QB. In the backfield will be Scott at FB and either KW or Holliday at the TB position. It will be very similiar to the offense we saw Florida run against us. There are 4 options on the play. 1) FB slam to Scott 2) Option left or right (to the long side of the field only) with either QB keeping or pitching to the TB 3) End around to one of the fleet footed wideouts (Randle, Lafell, Toliver, Jackson) 4) Fake option and step back and pass to Tight end or FB Scott over the middle or a longish pass to one of the wideouts This relieves Jefferson of having to try to carry this offense all by himself and helps him to relax. With Jefferson in the game, he will be lined up with the exact same sets as Shepard for a portion of the time he is on the field. The remainder of the snaps will be 3, 4 and 5 wideout sets with a TB in the backfield whenever possible for delayed handoffs keeping the defense honest. The pass plays will be quick hitting plays like that of a west coast offense, allowing yards after catch in which short passes will go for long plays. This also keeps Jefferson from having to think about the pass rush and hold onto the ball for too long. Mix in a few designed QB delayed runs up the middle, especially in 5 wideouts sets, again throwing the defense off balance. Misdirection. Multiple formations. Keeping the defense off balance. Gary Crowton football from 2007. It's all I ask.
Im telling you right now that Auburn is our elixir no matter what we do on offense. Even our offensive line will look all world against Aub's front 7. We will run and throw all over their azz. Their D-backs are toasted so often our recievers will have career days. JJ will see them open time and time again and lose his reluctance to throw the ball. On defense we will eat their misdirection and trickery alive. I see Aub as the perfect breakout game to set up the last half of the year.
The difference imho is that Tebow can throw.... the threat was there.... Shepard is no threat to the defense (YET) in the throwing game. Very quickly those plays will dry up. I do like having Holliday and Shepard on the field at the same time... the wild cat option with Holiday is what sprang Shepard for that big run. The whole defense was keyed in on Holliday.... so I like that idea.
I wouldn't mind seeing Lee QB in shotgun Shepard RB next to Lee Dickson TE WRs Tolliver, LaFell, and Randle You can do the delay handoffs to Shepard and then go to a quick no huddle on the next play... put Lee out at WR and put Shepard in the wild cat.... no switching out players no huddle, no looking to the side lines crap
Something needs to change thats obvious to everyone Sadly we dont see any changes or wrinkles. This is a similar outlook as Ive been having. Except Id move Shepard around more but keeping it simple. The thing that is the same is Im all for a more option oriented attack. Something needs to be done, this O is just too inadequate and its getting worse. I wonder if will get to the point where you just say the hell with it and take your lumps with the super frosh? OSU did well with Pryor taking lumps. Although its easier in the Big Ten. I dont see Miles ever doing that, I just brought up it for conversation.
I think a lot of this is right on the money. I'd LOVE to see us use our personnel like this but how many times have I seen these same type of posts before. How many posts have we seen with "is this the game that Shep throws his 1st pass". Miles have a news conference and he promises that Shep will get 10-15 touches. Then............NOTHING. The kid doesn't even get off the bench or runs 2-3 carries up the middle. He gains 6 or 7 yards a pop then........bye bye Shep. I think this sort of thing is what is driving a lot of the fans nuts. Also get rid of the look to the sideline thing. The only thing it's messing up is our offense.
Here's the deal. None of us has ever seen Shepard pass or run the option. If he was spectacular at both during practice, he would be starting. I'm not sure I want Crowton putting Shepard into the game just to show the armchair coaches what he already knows . . . that Shep isn't ready yet. Make our best runner a blocker? Holliday as a regular tailback? Frankly, I'd like to see Shepard tried at tailback--we know he can run.
We gotta do something different. I see the way Mcluster is used at Ole Miss and wonder why we can't use one of the few men on the planet faster than him more. Lots of misdirection, lots of motion pitches, circle routes, backfield flat routes. Get Trindon one on one with anyone on the planet beside Usain Bolt and he has a chance to break it open. IMHO
