The original poster is spot on with the sacks, but i will take sacks over pick 6's any day of the week. JJ just needs more coaching, and more experience, he does hold onto the ball way too much, but this is fixable. My question was going into this game, could we control the line of scrimmage, which we did, control the clock, which we did in the first half, keep their defense on the field, which we did in the first half, and put the ball in the endzone, which we had trouble doing. I thought the offensive line played a great game, Georgia has a good D Line, and they gave Jefferson plenty of time to throw the ball, he just didn't feel comfortable throwing for some reason on the plays he was sacked. Like Cripp said, better to take the sack then to give the other team the ball. We have to get better in the red zone. You cant have the ball inside the 30 4 times and only come away with 6 points on the road against a good team. This team has heart, and reminds me of the 07 team. Get used to these nail biters, because i have a feeling every game is going to be like that. Take your meds before the game, smoke a bowl, do what you have to do keep your heart rate down, because its going to be another wild, wild season.
Considering that we had guys dropping like flies, I thought they played hard too and am proud of them. But it wasn't the best blocking. Georgia's line did a much better job on pass protection. I totally agree about Jefferson needing to move up in the pocket and not just planting himself in one spot. Drew Brees is the best in the NFL. I know you're not comparing them or anything, but Drew has had a little more time to learn. No, a 4th and 1 QB sneak in a formation so tight that no other play is possible is on the coaches. Also, a 3rd and 1 option when Jefferson hasn't been running the option that well for a while now is also on the coaches. Part of the reason we had actual drives (unlike Georgia) in the 1st half is because our QB was hitting most of his targets. That's very fair. I don't even know what that really means. Florida is #1 in the nation and expected by many to win another title. We are #4 right now and 5-0. He's doing a pretty good job for us.
I never called for him to be replaced but I remain suspect just like I did during the summer when everyone was on the hype bandwagon, that's all. I thought the coaches have been doing a bad job for him until today, the coaches put him in situations to make some throws today and I really didn't see any improvement. He actually is starting to looked scared on pass and run plays now. Some of those run plays are kind of horrible, he shouldn't be running that if he is going to run back in first threw the line. Next week is a new week... I think it's his team through next week then you evaluate him after that game, if you want to make a change that is the place you would want to do it with a bye the next week... I am not saying they should or shouldn't... just if they are... that would be the place. I hope he improves but my gut says eventually over the next 2.5 years Lee will be back on the field for some reason. If he starts improving then this conversation becomes moot.
Because Lee has proven what exactly? Come on dude... JJ completed almost 67% of his passes for 200+ on the road against a ranked team with only one turnover. His passes were MUCH more accurate than what you're giving him credit for (their defensive backs were blanketing our WRs too). I agree about the option plays as I have said before. He's not doing well on those. But that's a small part of our game. I'm more concerned with turnovers and how you play when the game is really on the line. So in those areas, he was successful today for me.
I've been very pleased with his play.. he struggles at time.. but he was making the intermediate throws today and that shows improvement.
I think that something that you (LSU-SIU) are ignoring is the fact that JJ is going up against progressively better defenses. So some of the "lack of progression" that you see, I see as good progression. He is not only holding his own, but moving the O better than ever against the best defense he has faced to date. Not necessarily scoring, but moving the ball. I would argue that he is in fact getting better. I saw vast improvement by the entire offense in the first half, but poor pass blocking in the second half (probably due to the flu). Put JL in with that pass protection and UGA gets at least one pick 6.
You know what lets just take this game right here. Last year we Lose to UGA BECAUSE of Lee's Pick 6s This year we Won against UGA IN SPITE of Jeffersons Sacks
JJ is much more mobile than Lee. He would put the ball up to avoid the sack. JJ can scramble somewhat. Can you imagine what kind of turnovers Lee would have this year with our porous O line?
