Is U.S. Now On Slippery Slope To Tyranny? - IBD - Investors.com

When Adolf Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920s, leading up to his taking power in the 1930s, he deliberately sought to activate people who did not normally pay much attention to politics.

Such people were a valuable addition to his political base, since they were particularly susceptible to Hitler's rhetoric and had far less basis for questioning his assumptions or his conclusions.

"Useful idiots" was the term supposedly coined by V.I. Lenin to describe similarly unthinking supporters of his dictatorship in the Soviet Union.

Put differently, a democracy needs informed citizens if it is to thrive, or ultimately even survive.

In our times, American democracy is being dismantled, piece by piece, before our very eyes by the current administration in Washington, and few people seem to be concerned about it.

The president's poll numbers are going down because increasing numbers of people disagree with particular policies of his, but the damage being done to the fundamental structure of this nation goes far beyond particular counterproductive policies.

Just where in the Constitution of the United States does it say that a president has the authority to extract vast sums of money from a private enterprise and distribute it as he sees fit to whomever he deems worthy of compensation? Nowhere.

And yet that is precisely what is happening with a $20 billion fund to be provided by BP to compensate people harmed by their oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Many among the public and in the media may think that the issue is simply whether BP's oil spill has damaged many people, who ought to be compensated.

But our government is supposed to be "a government of laws and not of men."

If our laws and our institutions determine that BP ought to pay $20 billion — or $50 billion or $100 billion — then so be it.

But the Constitution says that private property is not to be confiscated by the government without "due process of law."

Technically, it has not been confiscated by Barack Obama, but that is a distinction without a difference.

With vastly expanded powers of government available at the discretion of politicians and bureaucrats, private individuals and organizations can be forced into accepting the imposition of powers that were never granted to the government by the Constitution.

If you believe that the end justifies the means, then you don't believe in constitutional government.

One of the dumbest articles I've read. BP presides over a well blowout that costs thousands of folks their jobs. They are responsible for the damage. How you going to do that without money? BP is taking responsibility for their mess, that is all that is going on here. The administrator is the same guy tapped by Bush to administer the 9/11 give away (why did the govt. do that anyway, what was different about that disaster that the govt. should just give them millions?).

It will be funded 5 billion a year. If BP finds it was defective casing, or not their responsibility, they can stop making payments and sue the responsible party to recover any money they think they don't owe.

Have to agree. I don't know what it is about Obama that makes normal people want to buy into crazy conspiracy theories.

I'm not going to draw comparisons with Hitler but there is an interesting point to this section of the article.

Let's see who this administration targets for the upcoming elections. I believe they'll go after the young and minorities and use scare tactics and racism to generate votes. It's unfortuante these groups don't realize they're being used and unfortunate they don't realize the party considers them "useful idiots".

If these groups ever wake up and realize their votes have been bought for little to nothing, this party will be in serious trouble. Most elections are not won by a landslide (except maybe Reagan's second term) and a small demograpic slide could change the politics dramatically. Hopefully the un/underinformed un/undereducated will soon understand how they've beeen taken advantage of.

Well people certainly didn't elect Obama because of this policies.
He clearly stated that he had planned to mold the country in his image by many things including nationalized health care, shutting down the coal industry, etc.

I think a lot of people voted for him because of his skin color so that we could all feel good that we were able to get past the color barrier and we were no longer a racist country as some has or still sees it.
Hope and change was the message but I also think that some were deceived by this man.
I also think some ignored his message for various reasons, they were in a trance and reality has slapped them in the face!
Most don't like his hope and change or his health care when you look at the polls of today.
There is an extreme case of buyers remorse.

The state of Arizona is under seize by illegal Mexicans and drug runners, saw some US police threatened as well on HLNs.
The Fed is going to sue over this?
Then you have Obama shutting down oil drilling?

The sooner we can get rid of this administration the better off the country will be.
The only percentage of Americans who still support him are those on government assistance, forty one percent!
A bunch of radical Chicago Thugs.
The real radicals are in the white house and those that still support him!

Its too bad some here chose not to read the article.
It definitely did have some better points inside.

First tell me how he nationalized health care, as far as I know its still run by private industry not government, but if you can explain how he nationalized it i'll listen, but if you dont know what nationalized means, i can help you understand it..

Also, show me the polls where most people are against it.

Also, they are suing because the constitutionality thats in questions, which is clear to me. I can point that part out as well if you need help with it.

I wont get into why people voted for Obama, but because of his skin color could be viable, but African Americans make up 13% of the population, with those allowed and able to vote being much lower, possibly a small percentage of the voting population.
You want to explain why folks voted for Obama, see Bush for that.

MM i think the right wing look at it like this. They may be the minority but they will continue to use phrases like, the american people want this, or the american people are pissed because of this, or the american people want that, when they really mean, i want this, or i am pissed because of this, or i want that. It doesn't matter how many people are for or against it, because to them, they are the only opinion that matters, or that ever will matter, even if it is not shared by the majority of americans.
