Is there a specific reason that we can't get an elite QB

BL: LSU's QB situation has everything to do with an unfortunate string of events.

    1. Ryan Perrilloux shoots himself in the foot. Repeatedly.
    2. Jarrett Lee becomes a picksixophile.
    3. Jordan Jefferson is about where most recruiting experts actually thought he'd be - a work in progress heading into his Jr year, which was probably going to be his RS-Soph year had #1 not happened.
    4. Chris Garrett bails. I still don't get that one.
    5. It's a down year (IMO) in QB recruiting in LSU's most fertile recruiting grounds.

I'm sure there are probably a couple more things folks would add.

But one recruiting class isn't going to be the answer to all of this. What IS going to be the answer is for JJ or JL to actually step up this year and next year. That's it. Zach Lee should not be in the math.

LSU has recruited some very good QBs. I don't know if it's bad luck, or what, but it just hasn't turned out as well as, say, the DB or RB recruiting has.

    1. Louisiana does not produce great talent at QB. my opinion ( Randall Mackey was the best talent that i had seen since brock berlin and we didnt take a chance on him.)
    2. We have'nt evaluated QB's well in the miles era.just my opinion (I wrote on this board that i would'nt have offered jarrett lee way before he committed.)
    3. We have not developed the talent at QB. (Jefferson is very talented but the scheme and play calling does not fit his talent..)
4.LOUISIANA DOES NOT PRODUCE GREAT TALENT AT QB!!!!

    JUST MY OPINION

I can't argue with any of that when considered in terms of the last 8-10 years.

I don't think Jefferson's problem is scheme, though. Being an athlete and being skilled are two different things. Jefferson did not show up at LSU with enough QB skill. He's still a talented athlete. Just needed to become a talented and skilled QB. We'll see if he's there yet.

Basically, LSU runs the spread option much of the time, depicted below...

Sometimes, though, the Tigers run the pistol...depicted below....

Sometimes they run the pure spread...depicted below.....

And sometimes, the Tigers run the standard I-formation....depicted below....

Basically - Crowton and Miles don't strap themselves with formation or "schemes". But in general, I think LSU runs a spread option offense with variations.

LSU has recruited more big, athletic quarterbacks recently and fewer thinking, student-of-the-game quarterbacks. Having the skill is only half of the picture. Smart and perceptive is the other part and quick decision-making above all.

Sometimes its easier to take a smart quarterback and develop his athleticism than to take a gifted athlete and make him into a smart quarterback.

    I have.

2003 Matt Flynn and JaMarcus Russell: Both played well, Flynn got us a NC

    2004: none

2005: RP: Would have had us set, only turned out as a punk

    2006: none

2007: Jarrett Lee: Bombed completely shell shocked.

2008: Jordan Jefferson: is our starter, hopefully shows great impovement.

2009: Chris Garrett: Left team Russel Shepard: Moved to WR

2010: Zach Lee: Freshmen year, probably wont see too much time

Since RP, we have landed QB's who have been top ten, but never panned out. Verdict is out on JJ, especially this year, and Zach Lee.
