In light of what is going on at Auburn, combined with the emergence of 'bama and Ole Miss, I think our championship 'push' has shifted to the even-numbered year seasons. Take this year for example: if we take care of business at home (big if) and don't piss away the Arkansas game, we (as a one loss team to FL on the road) play FL in the SEC Championship game. Just curious what other's think? :tigerhead

Good point. And, honestly, I've never bought into the odd-year thing anyway. I think it has more to do with the team than the schedule.

I basically agree. But I'd rather play Bama and Auburn in BR anyday. But the team is a bigger factor.

funny you should say that. when talking about the future of LSU football with a friend i mentioned that even though next year is an odd year, we play bama and Uga on the road which is pretty tough.

miles will have another tough year next year imo but i really think '10 and '11 are gonna be championship run years. we rotate uga off the sched and rotate vandy and tenn on.

better times ahead but maybe too far ahead for impatient fans.

In this century LSU has . . .

    • won the West Division in 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007.
    • won the SEC in 2001, 2003, and 2007
    • won the National Championship in 2003 and 2007.

Zippo in even-numbered years. The road schedule is important.

It's a powerful argument. But with the rise of Ole Miss (at least a little), the fall of Auburn, I think this year may have been a huge missed opportunity.

In fact, based on QB and rebuilding the defense, 2010 may be the most realistic year to compete for an SEC and/or national title again.

I think it is a myth based on the trends of the SEC and LSU's success created in 2006 because of the horrendous away schedule we had that year (4 top ten teams).

In 2000 and 2002, LSU was not nearly good enough to win the West, but nearly did in 2002 because Bama was on probation.

In 2004, LSU nearly won because Auburn was the only other team with a pulse in the West. Also throw in an angry Georgia team on the road.

Basically, I think the divisional rotation/permanent opponents is the worst part of this league. In 2006, LSU had to play Florida on the road as their permanent opponent. Arkansas had a 7-5 South Carolina team.

The whole "we can't Auburn at Auburn" mystique is officially over. Their program is in steep decline.

Which means the even and odd years thing is not very meaningful anymore.

One year we're playing at Bama, the next we're playing at Florida.

We're got to be good enough for it not to matter. Period.

And the point that hasn't been mentioned yet is that also the road games to the "hard" east teams that rotate has shifted to odd years. Next year we GO to Georgia. In 2011, we go to Tennessee (though one could argue that's not tough right now). Back in 2004, we wen't to Georgia, and 2006 we went to Tennessee. Every 5 years, the tough East teams shift from odd years to even years.

The home schedule was the key factor. In our championship years we had a fairly easy road schedule.
