greenie and i were talking tonight about possibly making a trip to the cws this year just to see some good college baseball, whether or not lsu goes. and that got me thinking.... when would we go? beginning? end? can we manage the whole 10-11 days? the cws schedule is two games a day with some days only one game. that seems crazy to me. when we went in 05 because tulane was there, we talked to parents who (if tulane had made it through the whole cws) would not have been able to stay till the end because of the sheer length of it. i know this is all about $$, but it is difficult (at best) for most people to attend the whole series. between the expense of it and time off work, most people have to cut the stay in omaha short on one end or the other. and if we go, i have no idea when it would be or if we can manage the whole series.
The problem comes down to the nature of baseball and PITCHING. The quality of the games would be much lower if teams had to play every day for a 5-day stretch. Could you imagine Ranaudo and Coleman getting one chance each to pitch in the CWS? In a tournament like this with eight teams, you have to give teams a chance to rest their pitchers. Therefore, the CWS is not too long at all.
the quality of baseball would be fine if it was normally scheduled but its all about money and yes it is far too long. sometimes there could be zero or simply one game as the trny progresses and thats inexcusable. also the 3 game series at the end is a complete disinterest to anyone not in the finals. i really wish it would go back to the old format. the bats were the problem and that has been fixed. to an extent. what most people used to do although this doesnt apply now is wait til LSU won 2 games and then head up there or simply for the championship weekend. but now you'd have to take off monday tuesday and possibly wednesday after being there 9 days or so already. craziness.
I'd go at the end just on the face that it would be easier to find good tickets with some teams already being knocked off.
I was only there for a few days in 2004 but my family went in 1997 and 2000 (without me) and stayed the whole time. Okie, I know you travel a good bit so you know a lot of the tricks to save $. - Find hotels that offer free nights or rewards programs - Ballpark food is expensive. Fix a sandwich at the hotel or between games. Bring snacks. - Make friends with other fans at the hotel or in the stadium and tailgate with them. - Best thing is people in Omaha LOVE LSU. Let me know if you two decide to make the trip and I'll give you some info on restaurants in the area and other LSU fans who go to Omaha on an annual basis.
sometimes i think i am the queen of rewards programs. there is only one chain we stay at if at all possible, and greenie makes sure he does the same for business trips so when work pays he gets the points. and my business credit card gets points for the chain. still trying to decide and it depends on if and how much time greenie can take off work. right now it looks like if we go it will just be a long weekend first weekend cause of his work schedule. but to answer my original question, i think its too long. its all about the $$. i, too, wish they would go back to the old format. teams are gonna be no more "pushed" during a shortened format than they are during the regular season when playing two mid-week games on top of 3 day weekend series.
I don't think it is too long. The 10 days with 8 teams is designed to allow the teams to play at their best and not be worn out towards the championship game. There is certainly some strategy involved but you also want to the more talented team to take the title. I have heard the complaint, however, that the season (and CWS) are too early. Which makes it harder on the northern teams. I'm sure the format would be changed if interest or attendance were beginning to suffer. As far as I know, this is not the case. A long weekend would be a great idea for you and Greenie.
I completely agree. Anyone else notice that the three big revenue sports all have their championship games during the week? Football: Thursday night Basketball: Monday night Baseball: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday nights The football championship not being on a Saturday bothers me the most.
