CBS even went so far as to report that he died today: Reports of Joe Paterno's death refuted by family | NOLA.com
Paterno is not doing well, that is not disputed: Joe Paterno is 'very sick' but conscious and able to communicate | PennLive.com It seems that a publication called Onward State reported his death. Shortly after CBS Sports and Huffington Post reported the same thing, but apparently did not cite their sources. The news of Paterno's death was refuted by Paterno's sons among others. CBS later said "Paterno family spokesman denies @OnwardState report that Joe Paterno has passed" and edited their original release. The Poynter Review Project put out a release, How false reports of Joe Paterno’s death were spread and debunked, where they said "CBS Sports published its obituary saying that Paterno "has died," seemingly based on the Onward State report, but without direct attribution". CBS claimed that attribution or citing of the original source was in the original report. I didn't see it when it came out. I'm already 30 minutes behind at least, but Ronnie Ramos who is the NCAA Managing Dir. of Digital Communications came up with an original screenshot: https://twitter.com/#!/RonnieRamos/status/160935213634031617/photo/1 Ramos commented "Here's the original CBS post on Paterno. No attribution, but link to OS site. That good enough an attribution?" Anyway the whole thing is turning into a cautionary tale of mixing twitter and journalism.
