reasonable thought... look at it the other way though - Let's assume that michigan wanted miles in 07... (give me that?) In their minds the situation failed b/c they were too eager. If they wanted miles this year, couldn't they just let richrod sit until this coming saturday? To keep speculation and problems from arising before Miles' bowl game, possibly causing him to 'take a stand' about a damn strong football team? just some devil's advocate. At this point it's all speculation, and I honestly believe CLM has enough class to be true to his current players and give them his attention until the bowl game is done. With that being said, unless a new coach is named at Mich... I have to believe Miles is someone they'd go after, and as much as I would like him to stay, it's his 'home'. Buyouts, salaries, and contract extensions can't really compete with home.
Except that the buyout for RR got lowered to 1.5million on or around 1/1/11. Therefore they could not fire him a month ago without tossing him a lot more dough.
Everyone knew they were waiting on the buyout to drop on the 1st. Their top target was and still is Harbaugh who finished his final game on the 3rd anyway so it made perfect sense. Rich Rod even brought his attorney into the meeting with the UM officials to make that point and try to make a case to earn some of that reduction in his buyout back.
If tusk is right and miles goes does Gus get an offer and if he does how will he do? What about chucky g. Heard that he may want to coach at lsu. I don't see that. He has a super bowl ring and there are lots of openings in the NFL right now if he wanted to coach again. Because les didn't say I'm not going to mich and have a great day I have the gut feeling he's going home to finish his career. One thing for sure it's been fun. If they told me the decision was mine to make to keep les or have sabanhole back I would keep miles. Let the wolves come out to feast.
This is what i can't get out of my head. The three obvious candidates are Harbaugh, Miles, and Hoke. Harbaugh is not taking the job, we all know that. Hoke has said repeatedly he would take the job in a New York minute but we haven't heard a peep out of anyone saying Hoke is talking with UM or is traveling to Ann Arbor or anything. That leaves Miles on the obvious candidate list. They are going to be air tight with contacting him if they want him because of what happened in 07. So the bottom line is that they are waiting to see if they can get Miles before talking to Hoke, or they are actually doing a much broader search than most people think. I put Miles leaving at 50/50.
First things first. To even think Gruden would be the LSU coach is unbelievably naive. Stop it. Second, why do people keep comparing "damn strong team" to yesterday's presser? Think about it... "Damn strong team" was a presser called DIRECTLY to counter ESPN's false slanderous report that Miles had accepted the HC position at Michigan. He was pissed off when HE CALLED that presser. In pressers prior to that one, Miles talked about Michigan a lot, calling it HOME, and left NO DOUBT he was thinking about Michigan. Yesterday's presser had nothing to do with Michigan, until a question was asked. Yesterday's presser had to do with the friggin' Cotton Bowl game LSU is playing in TOMORROW! In yesterday's presser, Miles didn't say anything about Michigan being HOME, and flat out said "They will always be Michigan", which says to me "I'm not worried about them, they'll be fine without me". Think about things, man...
My gut tells me Coach Miles will be at LSU. I think he will help Michigan find a damn good coach and it will not be him. Chief could have taken the Texas job - he didn't because he will be here with Coach Miles in the future. They have talked and it is good for LSU.
You make great points Fish, but the longer it goes, (in my opinion) the worse it is for LSU. Think about the Saban to Bama thing. Saban turned it down, said he wasn't interested, they went after Rich Rod, Rich Rod pretty much left them hanging for awhile then turned them down also. The Alabama Black Tie's, or the guys you never see, and don't know their names, pretty much gave Mal Moore a bag of cash, and told him to bring Saban back or else. (at least that is what i see in my screwed up mind) Les Miles loves his kids. I think there are parts of LSU he loves, the tradition, Tiger Stadium, etc. But then you have retarded fans, who want the guy fired after a win. Then you also have the fact that his contract wasn't rolled over after the last 2 years. Who knows if that has left a bad taste in his mouth as well. If Michigan comes a knockin with a bag full of cash, we don't know what will happen. Until it's announced that Michigan has hired a coach, then I can't sit here and be comfortable about this situation. But, it's not in my hands, and there is nothing I can do about so, C'est La Vie.
I'll get this out of the way... I have no REAL idea whether Miles is leaving or staying. With that said, that wasn't the point of my post. My post is to point out that it makes NO sense to compare yesterday's presser to the "damn strong team" presser from 3 years ago, simply because the situations are light years apart. There is NOTHING comparible about the two press conferences. Had Miles gone thru the "damn strong team" thing in the middle of an SECCG presser that someone just happened to ask a Michigan question at, that would be one thing. But that isn't at all what happened. And everyone seems to be relating the two. That, and the Gruden thing is just plain silly. :nope:
