Agreed. I'd love to see Lee get a shot at redemption this year, but I'd rather it happen with a 17-point lead.
Lee had a shot at redemption when he was given a start against a cupcake LA Tech team, and well, he failed to impress whatsoever. Completing 33% of your passes against one of our easier opponents is not exactly a great sign of future success. In fact, Lee actually regressed between his freshman and sophomore years. With just a 40% (16 of 40) completion rate and a paltry 4.9 YPA, he made Jordan Jefferson look like Johnny Unitas. Minus the absurd amount of sacks (and 34 really is an absurd amount), Jefferson's numbers from last year were actually pretty damn good for a first year starter. 61%, 17-7 TD/INT ratio and five 200-yard games. Even if those numbers improve only slightly with his natural progression, you can win an SEC title with that. Minus the sacks of course. I think the kid will be okay.
That was a cringeworthy game, definitely. He looked like the 2008 season just broke him down mentally, and he just never recovered. He has nice physical tools, but it doesn't look like Lee's mind is ever in the game. The guy reminds me of people who freeze and panic when they have to take a test even though they know the material. Having said that, he's showed a lot of guts sticking it out here when a lot of people, myself included, thought that a transfer would do him the most good. And the fact is we still need a serviceable backup since Garrett is nowhere near ready to see any meaningful action yet.
Jefferson - 59% completion percentage, 5.6% TD ratio, 2.1% INT ratio, 7 yards per attempt Lee - 51% completion percentage, 4.8% TD ratio, 5.5% INT ratio, 6.7 yards per attempt Lee is as likely to throw a pick as Jefferson is to throw a touchdown on any given attempt. I think we can stop the Lee vs Jefferson stuff, now. The real question is whether or not Jefferson is good enough to be a championship QB at LSU. We better hope he is, because he's the best option that we've got right now.
I hope JJ is the man. I have seen him in spurts, seems like usually we are in hurry up mode, and it seems like he doesn't have time to think and he really gets it going. He can hit short routes and sometimes throw some truly great medium passes. Next series you are waiting to see more, and he slows down, holds the ball too long and gets sacked. He has the talent, but he's inconsistent. Hopefully the year of experience will let it click for him, although of concern, he did not show it in the spring scrimmage. I want him to be the man, but I'm not convinced yet. Can he manage us to winning the west? I don't know, we have a tough schedule this year, as usual. I'd like to see J. Lee get some minutes each game to keep him sharp in case we need him later in the year.
I think he is going to surprise a bunch of people. I have no doubts in his ability. So much so that at the end of the season some will be wondering about a jump to the NFL...wait fot it.
i have yet to see one QB improve since crowton has coached our Qb's i saw Flynn come off a great peach bowl game and turn it into an alright 2007 season as a fifth year ssenior, i saw jarrett lee who was terrible in 08 for the most part play the worst game i have seen against LA tech and he choked at Alabama, an then JJ went from a decent year in 09 (much better year than he was given credit for) to having a pretty bad spring game....... but i hope next year shows a QB improve for the first time since JR took the reins as a Juinior
I will stick with my evaluation of him following the 08 season. - Limited throwing talent - Nice velocity on ball but completely ruined by a slow wind up - Has slightly above foot speed for the position but just a horrible decision maker in the option so it's a wash - Bad things that can be corrected: no pocket presents, doesn't look up field when moving, and doesn't go through progressions - good thing: knows he can't make the throw and doesn't try to... but that is kind of a bad thing as well... bunches of unneeded sacks I think he is good enough to get you 8-10 wins a year if you keep the talent around him high like at LSU. Crowton has not helped either QB in the last 2 years and I am encouraged by some of the things Crowton changed for the spring game. Some things that Crowton can do help either Jefferson or Lee. - Stop that to the sidelines for play crap - Stop the 3-6 option plays with Jefferson a game, especially to the short side of the field - Stop running up the freaking middle on 1st as the norm - Stop packaging player packages with specific plays.... 95% of the plays should be able to be ran by who is on the field... a few specific plays are fine but that should not be the backbone of your offense - More crossing pattern routes and stop sending 3 WRs deep all the time... drop off routes My guess is the offense will be somewhat improved but not because of QB play, it will be because Crowton pulled his head out.
Don't put too much stock into the spring game. Flynn had similar numbers in the Spring game of '07 (11/22 for 135 yds & 1 TD) and he turned out ok.. Perrilloux was also not spectacular that day (8/23 for 155 yds & 1 TD - 1 Int.). Not that I'm likening Jefferson to either of the two, but I am saying that the spring game isn't always a good benchmark of the QB's performance for the upcoming season. Personally, I think if our O-line is improved as I'm told it is and as a result we can run a little bit, then Jefferson's job will be easier and he will look better. We shall see in just 73 days, 5 hours, 28 minutes, and 54 seconds... but who's counting? :thumb:
