Since we've beaten the Les Miles issue to death, I thought we'd look at the OC situation. We know that Les brought in Billy Gonzales, supposedly to be a "passing game coordinator," do some QB coaching, and help Crowton come up with game plans. The question is how much of our 2010 offense will be Gonzales' or Crowton's? Especially since Les wants to play smash mouth football while Crowton favors the passing game. I still believe that Miles really wanted to ditch Crowton after last season, but his hand was forced by Alleva. In that situation is Gonzales just another assistant, or is he being groomed to take over the OC spot? If Les really wanted him for OC all along, will it be mostly up to Gonzales to call the shots? People have rightfully pointed to how the spring game playcalling seemed to actually make sense for a change. If that's the case, a good season and pacified fan base would give Les enough leverage to finally ditch Crowton. Now that I'm done with conspiracy theories, please discuss. :hihi:
Does Alleva really get to decide who Miles keeps and gets rid of on his staff? Man if so that really sucks.
I'm tempted to think Gonzales was brought to LSU to be more than just a receivers coach - because he could've stayed at UF and done that, right? So there seems to be a plan. I think loyalty and treating employees like the professionals they are is actually a great trait of the LSU athletic department (at least it's my impression and I might be totally wrong.). So I'm OK with taking care of Crowton while giving Gonzales some room to learn the OC gig by playing empowered understudy, or some such notion. But I'm not sure I buy that is what's happening. Maybe Crowton and Gonzales are simply evolving the offense. Good leaders often lean on talented seconds-in-command to help them root out problems and find new solutions. Maybe that's what's going on. End of the day, I think Crowton moves on after this season or the next. He's ready for a HC gig. Just my guess.
I always thought that the OC was in the booth to get the overall picture and call plays. But I think I have read somewhere on this forum that he is expected to be on the field this year. If true, that would tell me a great deal.
I'm hoping this is a plan. This seems like it could be a trial run as Co-OC for Gonzales at the very least in hopes that we can phase out Crowton. This may be Les' way of buying Crowton some time until he can find another job. Maybe Gonzales is the Russell Shepard Offensive Coordinator. I don't know really, but a man can dream, can't he?
I was merely setting the table for my on point position. It's disheartening to me to see that all of the (deleted) are not restricted to FSA.
