This was a rebuilding season for the D, and that means all positions. Brick gets a total pass. The DL's lack of performance had nothing to do with him not being a good coach, but more about the focus of the D as a whole. The points made about the talent level on the DL a very valid. In years pass we have had a difference maker, a game changer on the DL, this yr we did not. That will change and we will start to see the affects of his teachings starting next season. I look for a D that is back to the swagger and a top 5 D starting next season.
I think so too. Let him get a season or so with the defensive players he wants and works with them... if he can't get it going over the season or two then find someone who can get it done.
He was? Can you explain? Did he have the necessary tools to work with? You can't make chicken salad out of chicken ....! What great DL on the roster were brought down by poor coaching?
Let's just fire everyone and make most of the "fans" feel better...after all they're all coaching experts and know better than all others. After all, every top coach in America is just dying to drop everything and come here to LSU because we have the most knowledgeable, rational and reasonable fanbase in the world. :hihi:. (ought to be a piece of cake.)
The DL issues had more to do with talent and depth IMO. Rahim Alem looked entirely uncoached though.. the bright side was that Nevis really came around towards the end of the season it seemed.
Alem was the same player he was last year. Difference is last year he had Jackson on the other side demanding double teams. Alem is a pure edge pass rusher. This year he was doubled, more. Although you are right, in that he didnt have the techniques or a variety of moves to get free. As a whole the team wasnt at all coached up, the DL certainly fall into that category as well. The DL lacked a pass rush and their tackling was probably the worse on the team. They did start to come on though towards the end of the year. Progress was made. Nevis played very well at the end. Aghayere and Edwards showed flashes. Downs is also a player to watched out for.
I don't think Alem was double teamed once all season. Teams just let him take that outside rush and they blocked him out and around the QB. He was usually 5-10 yards behind every running play. Teams realized he would never take an inside rush and just let him run himself out of every play, both the pass and the run. He really made it easy for them.
The DL has several issues, but most of them got better as the season progressed. While it's not ideal, it is improving. I think Haley's done a decent job so far, certainly not enough to get fired after one season. I think that it will continue to improve with time:tigereye:
