NOLA.com LSU TIGERS CENTRAL Ed Orgeron works daily with LSU pass rusher Arden Key: 'He's not ready yet' Updated on September 7, 2017 at 8:15 PMPosted on September 7, 2017 at 7:05 PM LSU outside linebacker Arden Key (49) rushes outside linebacker coach Dennis Johnson during practice Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017. (Photo by Haskell Whittington, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune) 1share By Christopher Dabe [email protected], NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune Ed Orgeron stayed mostly mum on Arden Key. One day after the preseason All-American appeared in practice without a non-contact yellow jersey for the first time since his offseason shoulder surgery, the LSU coach on Thursday said only that Key is "not ready yet" for game action. Orgeron had said on his radio show Wednesday that he would find out more about Key next week leading into the SEC opener against Mississippi State. "We'll see what he can do in practices," Orgeron said. "I work with him every day. I know where he's at. He's not ready yet." Asked what he needed to see, Orgeron said: "More stuff." Key appeared more active in the brief practice portions open to media Tuesday when he donned the yellow jersey and Wednesday when he sported the regular purple jersey assigned to players on defense. Hear Ed Orgeron and watch Arden Key at LSU practice He also appeared to have a brace of sorts on the upper part of his left arm. The school announced in June that Key had undergone a shoulder procedure that would keep him out at least through the start of preseason camp. Orgeron said during camp in August that LSU never planned for Key to be ready for the start of the season. LSU started true freshman K'Lavon Chaisson in place of Key in the opener against BYU. Orgeron spoke Tuesday about the eventual return of Key so that LSU can used what it calls a "cheetah" defensive package geared toward putting as much speed on the field as possible. "Just bringing him along slowly and seeing what he can do," Orgeron said. "He's not ready yet." (Photo by Brett Duke, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune) 0shares By Christopher Dabe [email protected] NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune LSU played the opener last week without two defensive starters who did not travel from Baton Rouge to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Although those two players -- linebacker Donnie Alexander and cornerback Kevin Toliver -- were seen in practice this week, LSU coach Ed Orgeron said their playing status for Saturday would not be determined until just before kickoff. "I think that's going to be all the way to game time," Orgeron said. "(Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda) has not made a decision yet. Obviously Donnie had a tremendous spring for us. Donnie is up to 230. He's done a lot of good things. The young guys have, too." Those young guys were true freshman linebacker Tyler Taylor and redshirt freshman cornerback Greedy Williams. Taylor helped set a tone for the 27-0 shutout against BYU with a stop at the line of scrimmage on the second play of the game, and Williams picked off a deep pass down the right sideline that helped set up a second touchdown run by Derrius Guice. Those freshmen were among the 11 first-year players who logged snaps on defense and accounted for 199 of the 407 combined defensive snaps (48.9 percent) for the team, according to a NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune review of the game. Alexander and Toliver were among 13 players who did not travel with the team to New Orleans last week. Orgeron said last week that suspended players and players facing a disciplinary action would not travel for away games. Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda will decide which players will start on defense, Orgeron said. "I don't think Dave has made a final decision on who is going to start yet," Orgeron said. Ed Orgeron says DE Rashard Lawrence will not play against Chattanooga The Tigers already are assured of having an additional freshman start on defense in defensive end Glen Logan, who will start in place of sophomore Rashard Lawrence after he did not practice during the week. Lawrence was seen limping after LSU nose tackle Ed Alexander rolled up on Lawrence's left foot and ankle in the second quarter last week. Lawrence stayed in the game and played until the final series. (Photo by Michael DeMocker, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune) 0shares By Andrew Lopez [email protected] NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune LSU coach Ed Orgeron said defensive end Rashard Lawrence will not play against Chattanooga on Saturday in Tiger Stadium. Lawrence, who played all but the final series against BYU, appeared to have his ankle rolled up in the second quarter but finished the game. "Rashard will not play this week," Orgeron said to reporters on Thursday evening. Lawrence made four tackles, including a half tackle for a loss and a half sack in his first career start. Redshirt freshman Glen Logan, who made his first career appearance last week, is in line to start, according to Orgeron. Orgeron said that true freshmen defensive ends Justin Thomas and Neil Farrell will also be in the rotation at defensive end. Farrell was credited with one quarterback hurry against BYU while Thomas did not record any stats. "We think we're going to play three of those guys there," Orgeron said. "A lot of young guys. Going to let them play and get them some reps and see how they do." Lawrence was a preseason All-SEC third-team selection heading into the season despite not starting a single game last season. He recorded one sack in 2016 in the Citrus Bowl victory against Louisville and Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson. Logan was a consensus four-star prospect coming out of Destrehan in 2016, who redshirted last season with the Tigers. Thomas was an early enrollee with LSU in January and was a three-star prospect out of Spanish Fort (Ala.), while Farrell was also a three-star prospect from Alabama out of Murphy High School.
