Re: Obama silencing his critics I would love to hear examples. All I have heard mention of so far is DoS attacks, which are very easily recognized and prevented. Coincidentally, they also happen to be handled gracefully on a daily basis without shutting down large portions of the internet.
Re: Obama silencing his critics i know more than i need to know about what dos attacks are, what unix is, how it works, etc, dont lecture me. i am asking why the government involvement is necessary.
Re: Obama silencing his critics Who shut down the airline industry for 3 days following the 9/11 attack? Why was it necessary? Had there ever been an airline hijacking where the hijackers did not direct the plane to land somewhere and make political demands? This was a very different airline hijacking, the first time planes were used as weapons. The nature of terrorism changes. Do you think that all malicious IT attacks that can occur have been thought of, and protected against, particularly involving the internet? Am I lecturing you? I thought I was discussing the issue. From your statements I conclude you are not a computer expert. That is correct, isn't it? Based on your statements, I am entitled to draw certain conclusions relevant to this discussion and ask for corroboration.
Re: Obama silencing his critics can the internet murder 3000 people like the terrorists did with planes? my question to you is why the government needs to manage it. for the sake of this argument i am in fact an expert on computer security. the question to you is why the government needs to be involved.
Re: Obama silencing his critics Really seems rather ridiculous for the need of this. If I criticized the last administration on warrant-less wiretaps and other invasions of privacy. I have to strongly condemn this measure as well.
Re: Obama silencing his critics You didn't answer my question. The answer is that the government shut down the airline industry. The internet cannot murder 3,000 people, but misuse of the internet can cause a lot of damage to commerce that rides on it, or to internal security by disabling parts of the govt. IT infrastructure that the internet gives one access to. The govt. is responsible for protecting american lives and property and the free conduct of commerce in this country, or do you disagree with that? Does anyone own the internet? Why did the govt. shut down the airlines for 3 days? It needed to be done and the airline industry was not in possession of sufficient information quickly enough to be able to coordinate the action of all the other airlines and act quickly enough. That is why govt. must take action in those circumstances, and they did. I don't know anyone who disagreed with that action or considered it ill advised or unwarranted. Suppose there are 5 terrorist cells of 8 men each, heavily armed, with a coordinated plan to attack NYC. They plan to attack population centers in order and continue down a list, doing as much damage as possible. They know the police will try to track them down and kill them, and they want to communicate to the other cells what they see on the ground. What do the police know (so the other cells would know how the police plan to come at them), they suspect their phones have been under surveillance, and they have pre-established 200 email addresses on various services. They have wireless laptops to stay in communication. We need to take out their command and control, and they are using our internet to provide it. What are you going to do? Whose responsibility is it? Who has the intelligence (data I mean, not the brainpower) to know what is going on, and the ability to coordinate with all the service providers at once (surely no single service provider has all that capability). Anyone who can pull off 9/11 has this level of capability. It seems that shutting down the internet in NYC for a few hours would be a prudent action to take out their command and control infrastructure. The govt. is best positioned to make it happen (it could be the mayor of NYC in that case).
Re: Obama silencing his critics That is not the issue here. Nobody is asking for any invasion of privacy. The govt. is asking for the right to shut down the internet, an internet kill switch.
Re: Obama silencing his critics Maybe they thought more attacks would come in the following days? Why does this administration want to shut down drilling for 6 MONTHS???
Re: Obama silencing his critics I think I saw this episode of "24". Jack Bauer kicked all of their a$$es.
