I don't really understand why this is news now. This bill was in the senate last year.

Bill would give president emergency control of Internet | Politics and Law - CNET News

Although, I don't remember this being part of it:

So if the government declares an emergency and it ends up costing the consumer money, not only is the company immune from legal action, the government pays the company for their loss. Indirectly, we're paying companies to make mistakes that cost us more money in an emergency??:insane:

Funny how many liberals objected to the patriot act, but don't have much to say about this admin. Seems as if the fed is just steamrolling us with each successive year. I am as disappointed as ever in the current admin, but I also have yet to see any real hope of change amongst the republicans. Stalemate seems to be about the best we can hope for.

Seems like this falls in line with some prevalant illuminati theories that the internet would be destroyed in a few years...

    Re: Obama silencing his critics

The problem with the Bush wiretaps is that they were illegal. You can listen in on the phone conversations of suspected criminals with a court order based on sufficient reason to suspect illegal activity.

For sensitive matters of national security, there is even a special court set up just for those cases called the FISA court. The problem with the Bush listening is that they never got permission from the FISA court nor from any court, and they didn't just listen to suspected criminals, they listened to all international calls. That's illegal and it has been so judged.

An internet kill switch is an entirely different matter. I can see situations where it would be desired, such as a massive denial of service attack originating abroad, or a domestic terrorist attack where the terrorists are using the internet to communicate as their command and control structure. Setting up the mechanics would be like preparing for a massive oil spill where all the equipment and procedures are in place before the spill happens. It could be a needed means for the nation to defend itself in an emergency situation. If its provided for in the law, its not illegal. So what's the problem? Are you saying you can't see any situation in which this may be necessary?

    Re: Obama silencing his critics

So do you believe that shutting down the internet (ie the best form of spreading information) to silence critics of your actions to be legal. Sounds like controlling a propaganda machine to me. Similar to burning books that Hitler didn't appreciate, like the 1940's.

What I see is way to much power in one person's hands. "Absolute power corrupts absolutly". And to be frank I believe we have the most corrupt administrations in power that we have ever had! I wouldn't trust these people (repubs or dems) as far as I could throw them.
