According to a Bleacher Report article entitled, "Finalists for 2011 Heisman Announced," and an attached poll, the voting may be close. For me, one comment about our TM7 was interesting, so I share it with y'all: Comment by: Anthony: "Heisman = best player on best team..........best team usually best 2 of 3 or more in offense, defense, special teams.......Tyrann Matthieu plays on 2 of 3.......best player on best team, hands down this year is Tyrann Matthieu of No. 1 LSU. And his choice would help credit many other outstanding defensive players from the past who were the best players in their years except they weren't on offense. Too bad. Make the right choice this year, Heisman people.......Tyrann Matthieu." Nice! Best Player on Best Team?: 1. We know who is the best team. 2. Now pick the player on that team who is a Heisman Finalist. 3. Award Heisman. Bang. Done. Congratulations.
Stiff Arm Trophy: Who is the most outstanding college football player in America? Take out the suspension and I think he would have won it or at least come very close.
It really is too bad that he got involved in that and was suspended, exactly! Hopefully he has learned his lesson!
That's what I have been trying to say, good quote. Suspension for 1 game that was completely dominated by LSU shouldn't matter in my opinion.
It would have actually been better had we struggled defensively because of his absence (for his Heisman hopes, I mean).
I don't know, I don't think the trophy should automatically go to the candidate of the highest-ranking team. The rank/record of a team is not the only indicator of the wealth/amount of talent on the roster. It's a good one, but not the only one. You can have a superstar on the roster and crappy coaching, and where would that leave you? I believe he is one of the Top 5 players in college football, and he deserves to be considered, but it shouldn't be handed to him just because LSU is #1.
Ron Brooks was the honey badger in the Auburn game. That didn't serve Mathieu very well. And if he doesn't have the 2 punt returns vs Georgia, he doesn't get invited to NY. In fact, I think the 2nd punt return was necessary for him to make it there. It was that epic of a return. At that very moment, I think Heisman voters threw their hands in the air and said "phuck it, I have to put this guy on my ballot now".
No doubt the two returns against georgia, and the one against Arkasas is what got him the invite to NY. Personally the second return against Georgia, where he did not score was just sick!! I thought his best return of the year!
