Good story! I was there for those two heartbreaking games that year. I don't think anyone who played or sat in the bleachers that night against USC will ever get over that loss. No doubt the 2003/04 and 2007/08 National Championship seasons (yes I was there for both NCG ) have helped weaken that memory for sure but it will never be forgotten. Thanks for sharing the story. Read "It never rains in Tiger Stadium" written by John Ed Bradley if you haven't already done so. This is another great Tiger player who did not get over that game or college football itself. Now let's get ready for some Tiger Football. :tigereye:
I was there too. We were robbed, but one day we'll meet again on a bigger stage and revenge will be ours.:tigereye:
I remember it REAL well. LSU was a heartbeat away from greatness that year. I was a student only a year out of highschool. LSU was a bigger part of my life then than now. And I do think that those years only made these past few years of success even better. And Cholly Mack was my hero growing up. Brings back alot of memories. Man,,,,,,,,,,,I can't wait till Saturday night.
I remember that game but I wasn't there but listening on a transistor radio (remember those!) at a banquet in Biloxi, Ms. My ex-wife was an officer in a New Orleans hotel association and it was their annual meeting. So I gave my tickets for that game to my Mom & Dad. They went and loved it. My mom was the LSU Alum (from the late 1930's) and my dad was a huge Tiger fan who became one after marrying and moving to Louisiana in 1949. But back to me and my radio. I was wearing a tux so I had the radio tuned to WWL in the inside pocket of the jacket with the earphone plugged into my left ear. I was at the head table so I was looking at the room full of people, including one table full of Tiger fans with a large portable radio on their table. And during that last drive, people were looking at me for some sign of what was happening. And on USC's 3rd down play, when they called the penalty I picked up my napkin stood up and threw it down on the table... "flag on the play" the crowd mouthed. But then it turned out to be against the Tigers. And the rest you know. A lot of my Tiger memories are from listening to games on the radio as a kid. Halloween night 1959 after trick or treating. I remember Billy's run and the goal line stand. Then my dad called from Illinois at his parents where he had rigged an antenna outside to pick up WWL and listen to the game. After graduating in 1972, I remember listening to some real close games that next fall (1973) while laying in bed fully clothed since the radio was in the bedroom. Games seem more stressful laying down I think. And then their was the beautiful October afternoon we were sailing with friends on Lake Pontchartrain and listening to LSU and Charles Alexander against Vanderbilt. Just as we were headed into the Municipal Yacht Harbor the Tigers started moving the ball to maybe put the game away so we circled around out in the lake until the end of the drive. I learned how to tack a sailboat that day. And just a few years ago, I was up in Arkansas for an Auburn game on ESPN. The cabin didn't have cable and we had to listen to it and the signal kept drifting in and out. Radio used to be a big part of my LSU football experience, I kind of miss it.
