No, we didn't have to throw because we were up by a comfortable margin. You guys may as well get used to it. LSU isn't going to be a prolific passing team anytime soon. I would LOVE to see the passing game improve, and I think it will, but LSU will be a strong defense and running team. As long as they win, I don't really care. I don't think the lack of passing production is gonna hurt much, but mostly because I think if they have to pass, they can, and will.
The problem with your premise is you have to have a dominating run game to compensate for the lack of passing. We are so far from that. JJ better "get it" sooner than later.
IF yall ant 200 yards passing, it wont come off 16 attempts unless half are bombs. This is on coaching. JJ is more than capable of passing for 200+ a game, to bad thats not LSU's MO for this season..
Correct. JJ has passed for over 200 yds before, but he's not going to do that with 16 attempts. I'm confident if we passed 20-25 times/game, he would have 200 yd game frequently. I'm also confident that, if LSU needs to, they will pass more. When you're winning games by 3 TDs, there's just no need to pass. - Izzy, you have to admit that you tend to judge things from an offensive perspective. You criticized the special teams play by saying that only the UNC effort is the standard for A+ special teams play. In reality, I give the overall special teams play from the UNC game a lower grade than last night's special teams play. Against UNC, a chip shot field goal was missed that could've been the difference in the game. Last night, other than a phantom block in the back penalty, special teams play was impeccable. But since LSU had a record night for long kick returns and scored a TD, it catches your eye. Same with the offense. LSU scored 29 points last night, none on special teams. All on offense. Of course the defense set them up nicely, but still. The offense scored all the points. The offense didn't have to punt until the 4th quarter. It was a dominating performance, but since there were no highlight film material long bombs and trick plays, it doesn't catch your eye. Seems you have a tendency to be impressed by flashy play, and that just isn't this team's style. - I'd like to see some big plays to our WRs, and Shep throwing outta the Wild Tiger for that matter. But as long as LSU keeps winning, I'm just not gonna sit here and look at the one thing that isn't perfect. I'm much more concerned about our RBs putting the ball on the turf than I am about JJ's play last night.
Here's my thing, the kids hittin 9+ yds/completion and better than 60%, Vandy game being the exception, let the kid throw more. If he gets 25-30 opportunities things will open up.
I agree that JJ should throw more often, but another knock everyone has had on our team last year into this year was our losing the time of possession battle and wearing out our defense. The coaches are not only "protecting" JJ (I think a bit too much), but they are also trying to win the time of possession, which I think they are finally doing. And that is a very key point and necessary to be successful.
But you're living in a fantasy world if you think we'll keep winning with no passing game. That's akin to sweeping our problems under a rug. Florida is going to lift that rug and we're not gonna like what we see.
We're actually still losing time of possession. The only game we won TOP is against Vandy, thanks only to our defense. So even that stat line is skewed because the defense is getting off the field so quickly in most cases. It's about a 28-32 or 29-31 split right now.
It used to be 80% run and 20% pass; however, it has changed to about 70% run and 30% pass. One wanted to throw the ball about 25 to 30 times a game. If you threw the ball more than 40 times, the odds of losing was greater than 60%. Times have changed. Bottom line is to control the line of scrimmage and you do that by running the ball.
