I've read several times on this forum over recent weeks that LSU will not contend for titles if they cannot throw the ball. I found this interesting gem of a statistic from last season that shows where every team finished in "Passing Offense". Check it out. LSU is in the 90's, but they aren't alone there. http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2009&rpt=IA_teampass&site=org&div=IA&dest=O I believe LSU can throw the ball if they have to, but they haven't had to yet. Last year, LSU would find themselves having to throw the ball, and they did it. JJ's had some 200 yd games in his career, but when you only throw 16 times, it isn't likely to produce big numbers. If the QB only throws 16 times, and completes 10, but the team wins by more than 3 TDs, who cares??
I wonder what the run/pass ratio is for say the top 5 teams at the end of each season? I wonder what our ratio is for say the past three seasons?
And I didn't expect you to. Don't quote me, but I seem to recall hearing that 60% rush and 40% pass was the average for top ranked teams. I doubt that's a stat you could find using Google.
It was relatively easy to compute for the first three games. 125 rushing attempts and 58 pass attempts. That equates to 68% & 32% respectively.
I think as the season progresses, that will change more towards 60-40. In the last two games, LSU hasn't had to throw the ball.
I don't know. If we don't get some big runs in the late part of the games we do have to throw the ball.... we didn't have to throw the ball against MSU because we were content to kick fgs.
Interesting stat or not, we still have to improve in passing. If JJ does not take a step back in the next two games, perhaps that will be the sign we are looking for.
Year NC Offensive Rank Passing Rank 2009 Bama 15 (97) 2008 UF 9 (65) 2007 LSU 9 (59) 2006 UF 10 (29) 2005 UT 2 (50) 2004 USC 9 (14) Do you have to be an air it out team?.. no.. but you do have to have very high offensive production. Each of these champions averaged at least 200 ypg passing, most at least 230.
