Pitt, Syracuse apply to join ACC ranks, source says - ESPN Should Pitt and Syracuse leave the B.E., does that open the door for possibly WVU to be the 14th team for the SEC? What do you guys think? Would you want them? or prefer someone else?
Does this make it easier or harder to raid the ACC for teams like V-Tech? I imagine if the SEC takes a few of the ACC teams then the ACC will just swallow the rest of the Big East.
The ACC teams just signed an agreement that penalizes a school $20 million for leaving the conference. I think it's safe to say that the SEC will not be adding any ACC teams to the ranks. If the SEC expands to 16, WVU and Louisville are the two most likely eastern candidates, IMO. Mizzou (and of course, A&M) make the most sense to the West. That gives the SEC two new markets (Washington DC/Virginia and St. Louis) to collect revenue from.
$20 million is probably less than the amount they would gain in one season by joining the SEC. If a team is looking at their long term future, the $20mil would be an insignificant drop in the bucket.
I'd much rather see 6 12 team conferences that set up for a 12 team playoff. The first round being the conference championship game. The six teams in the playoffs are the conference champions with the 1 and 2 seeds getting a bye. Tie in the bowls and make it to where the Big 10 can play the Pac 10 in the rose bowl most of the time.
