Over the years, I've heard various mentions of an insurance system for college football players expected to be high draft picks. I've never seen details and have questions: Were there any LSU players insured in 2011? Any expected to be in 2012? Do you have to be projected as a 1st round pick or within top 3 rounds (for example)? Does the athlete or university start the process of looking for coverage? Is it an NCAA-wide program or specific to each university? Does a guy like Ciron Black that played through injury, which may have hurt his eventual draft status, able to file a claim (if insured)? I've heard Arian Foster was projected to be a high draft pick but then had a serious injury during his later years at Tenn and went undrafted. Would he have been able to file a claim if he was insured? What happens when he becomes an NFL star a few years later and then signs a big contract?
I remember Willis McGahee had an insurance policy on himself while at the U. That's really the only one ive heard of. I don't think he got to cash in on it though because he was drafted.
I think I'd read that Andrew Luck's family picked up an insurance policy on him in case of injury when he opted to go back to Stanford for his last year.
It's a lot older than a mere twenty years. It may be closer to a half of a century now. I know of an insurance agent in Northport who handled policies back in Bryant's tenure. There are a lot of kids that do this. More than you'd expect and it's not limited to guys who are thinking they are first round material.
